Get a superb summer hair makeover at Private i Salon!

Let me start off by saying I’m pretty low-maintenance when it comes to hair. I usually get it cut once or twice a year at most, preferring to have that ‘messy chic’ look, which really just means I’m not willing to spend time blowdrying, brushing and styling each morning! However, when the Hong Kong heat wave hit last month and my long hair became a frizzy, tangly hot mess in the humidity, I knew it was time to go for a new look. (It’s also a pretty clear sign when your hubby compares you to the hairy orange orangutan at the zoo – true story!). In all honesty, there’s nothing that spikes up your temperature more in this weather than having long, heavy hair clinging to your neck and face, so of course I couldn’t wait to get updated with a fresh do at Private i Salon!

The Private i Salon Group has several locations around town, on both the Hong Kong island and Kowloon side, and they offer all sorts of treatments from manicures to makeup to hair loss treatments, and of course, regular cut and colour services. I popped into the outlet in the Central Building on Pedder Street, ready for my glam hair makeover.

As soon as I sat down, I was offered a tall, refreshing glass of iced coffee to cool down. My hair stylist Yolanda them came over and introduced herself and asked what type of style I was going for. I told her just to chop off four inches or so, while creating some natural layers. After a quick wash and condition, I was back in the barber’s seat, and Yolanda got to work. Now I’m a bit paranoid when it comes to getting a haircut, which is probably why I don’t get one that often! I tend to freak out a bit if the length of time they take to cut my hair is either too short, which means they’re not doing the job properly, or too long, which implies they lack skill. Yolanda worked deftly and quickly, but paid close attention to detail and I could tell she knew exactly what she was doing. After half an hour or so, I had my new do and I felt (literally) that a burden had been lifted off my shoulders!

Next, I was introduced to the colouring technician, Ray. As my highlights were growing out, we discussed giving my hair a darker shade so I wouldn’t have to keep going back to re-do it. Since I’m not great at figuring out which hair colour suits my skin tone, etc. I prefer to have the stylist make all the decisions and take things into their own hands. After an initial consultation, Ray said she knew just the colour for me, and after that it was full speed ahead without any further input needed from me. I simply sat there perusing my magazines as she expertly coloured my hair.

After a quick wash, Yolanda was back to give me a final touch-up to snip off any loose ends, and voila! The before and after:

I left Private i Salon feeling completely refreshed and made-over. While I’ll probably grow my hair out again as fall sets in, I would definitely come back for a trim from one of their expert stylists!
