Calling all mamas — long-time mamas, new-mamas and mamas-to-be. We know how scary jumping back on the fitness bandwagon can be and how hard it is to find time in-between bottles and packed lunches. Ever here to help you get back on the running track, we’ve gathered together the best of Hong Kong’s mama-friendly workouts. From yoga to CrossFit to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, as usual, Hong Kong has something for everyone! No more excuses, get out your workout gear mamas!


Pilates / Yoga

H-Kore
Located in the heart of Central on Des Voeux Road, the H-Kore pilates studio is situated right beside the Central MTR Station exit and is mere minutes from several tram and bus stops. Perfect for a work out before a long day of running errands! Run mostly by women, H-Kore offers many women-specific classes that are sure to whip you into shape. Their BootyKore class combines elements of barre, booty work and dance that will allow you to engage in a full body workout while embracing your inner dancing diva. Also check out their Kettle Kore class (for building strength and endurance) and their Pre & Post Natal class (for the lucky expecting or recovering mamas)! Isofit
If you’re getting bored of the old gym workout, why not venture out and try Gyrotronic pilates? Isofit is a pilates centre right on Wyndham Street that offers a series of unique pilates and Gyrotonic classes unlike any workouts you’ve ever experienced! Isofits Gyrotonic® classes are small, four person classes that revolve around Gyrotonic towers and apparatuses and provide full-body workouts that will leave you feeling strengthened and invigorated.

Yoga Bam Bam 2

Yoga Bam Bam
Yoga Bam Bam is the new avant-garde yoga place on the block! It is known for having wacky pop-up classes like Yoga Hip Hop, Acro (Acrobatic) Yoga, Hand Stands and even Chill Out & Tune In Yoga with Live Music! Even its usual classes have some sort of unconventional twist: it offers classes like Youth& Family aerial yoga, Yoga with Basic Cantonese for Expats (great for Cantonese-learning mamas!) and Yang to Yin yoga!

Pure Yoga
If you live in Hong Kong, you must have heard of Pure Yoga. The most popular yoga centre in Hong Kong, Pure Yoga has six studios — four on Hong Kong Island and two in Kowloon. Its yoga studios offer over 1,200 classes each week in a range of different yoga forms taught by almost 200 professional yogis. Pure also offers a diverse range of themed workshops led by guest teachers and renowned yogis. Tryphena Chia’s upcoming 9-day awaken to your power workshop that includes an optional 3-6 day juice detox is a must-do! Sassy Mama also loves Pure’s Family Yoga class, brilliantly designed for kids ages 7-12 and their parents for some fun stretching and family bonding. Also check out their Forrest Yoga and Hot Hour classes that are slightly challenging, but still beginner-friendly and will get you feeling stronger, more toned and more flexible than ever!

Boxing / Combat

DEF Boxing

DEF Boxing
DEF Boxing is the place to go for personalised combat fitness training for mamas who like to pack a punch! Located just minutes from Central, DEF Boxing offers classes that will perfect your boxing technique while working those sexy muscle groups. It offers Circuit Six group classes that are capped at six students and cost a very reasonable $200 per class. In these classes you’ll do pad work and intense circuit training with professional trainers and boxing champions. They also offer separate regular and advanced classes, so you’re bound to find a class the fits you!

Impakt
Every Mama needs an outlet for relieving stress from work, kids and hectic errands. Impakt is the perfect place for you to jump-kick and back-fist all of your worries away while toning the bikini body that you desire. Impakt offers Ladies Boxing Classes where you can box it out against and alongside other women and mamas with professional boxing instructors by your side. If you’re a beginner, don’t fret! The trainers will give you a work-out that fits your ability level. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can also take classes in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Karate, Savate (French boxing) and Muay Thai!

Swish Club

Swish Club
Swish Club is sure to give you a warm welcome to the world of combat fitness. The Swish Club is a tightly knit local boxing community with super friendly instructors that will take you in with open arms. The club offers Ladies Muay Thai classes (Tuesdays 10:30, 13:00, 18:45, 20:00; Thursdays 13:00, 20:00; Fridays 10:30, 20:00; Saturdays 16:30) that are great fun and excellent for mamas of all levels. They also offer regular Thai boxing classes for those that want more of a challenge, and Kids Thai Boxing classes (for ages 6-13) if you want your kids to experience combat fitness alongside you and pick up some self-defense techniques.

Bikini Fit
Unleash your girl power with Bikini Fit, Hong Kong’s premier female-only fitness program! Bikini Fit works to help women sustain healthy lifestyles and, of course, get their fit bods on by offering fitness training sessions catering to every woman’s unique body type. Circuit 25
Circuit25 is an outdoor circuit group training class for all fitness levels that includes two 25-min sets —strength/resistance and cardio, followed by core work and cool down. Its main goal is to bring the average gym workout outdoors. To keep things interesting, the exercise routine or venue changes with each class. Circuit25 offers over 20 different sessions a week, with different locations and times for you to chose from, so there’s sure to be something to fit in your schedule! What’s more, Circuit25 offers free trial classes so that you can try it out before you invest in a Circuit25 regime! Prices are $200 for one class and $600 for four classes. Not bad, we say!

CrossFit Typhoon
CrossFit Typhoon is the way to go if you’re looking for an all-around workout that will boost your fitness level almost instantly. CrossFit is not your ordinary workout class. It uses constantly varied, high intensity functional movements and different weight apparatuses to train your body’s fitness for life. They focus mostly on your core, which is great for prepping for pregnancy or toning up post-baby! CrossFit also offers hour-long boot camp sessions that include various kinds of circuit-training, and functional exercises to maximise your cardio-vascular and overall conditioning. The bootcamp classes are a great way to get you familiar with group fitness training.

Seasons Fitness
Overlooking the lush Hong Kong park, Seasons Fitness is a convenient gym/day spa hybrid. It offers a full range of fitness services and state-of-the-art facilities and even has a female-only workout area that Sassy Mama loves! The centre offers step aerobics, spinning, kick-boxing, muscle conditioning, yoga, pilates and dance classes. We especially like Seasons Fitness’s Sunshine Interval class, an outdoor bootcamp session in Hong Kong Park where you’re guaranteed to sweat like a dog!

The Hit Room
Located conveniently on Siena Avenue, The Hit Room is arguably the best fitness centre in Discovery Bay. The Hit Room offers a range of workout classes that are bound to get you toned, fit and ready in time for your summer beach adventures. Sassy Mama recommends The Hit Room’s general toning workout classes, such as Legs, Bums and Tums and GRIT Strength + Core.

Dance Workouts

Pure Fitness
Sister centre to Pure Yoga, Pure Fitness also dominates the fitness centre scene in Hong Kong with four studios on the Island and one in Kowloon. They offer every type of workout/fitness class imaginable, but their best classes for minimal pain with maximal body toning are undoubtedly their dance fitness classes. Dance classes at Pure include Dance Aerobics, Disco Aerobics and Aero Mad! (a fusion of hi/lo aerobics and dance), Dance fitness, Funk Fusion and even pole dancing!

Flex Studio
Flex Studio is famous for its pilates and yoga classes but it also offers a special class that Sassy Mama adores: the Ballet workout class. Now all you dance-loving mamas out there can catch up to your little ballerinas whilst getting a good workout in! Elvin Beh, the instructor of this unique class, has been a professional ballet dancer with the Hong Kong Ballet for over seven years. With contemporary music playing in the background, the class is bound to bring out the graceful flexibility within you. The class combines stretching with strengthening to tone your abs, glutes and legs, and improve your posture and stamina. If you’re looking for more dance workout classes, also check out their ZUMBA© 60-mins multilevel class, where you’ll dance that flab off while having tons of fun.

Central Dance Studio
Ever wanted to party yourself into shape? Central Dance Studios offers Zumba classes where you can do just that. The dance studio has Zumba classes almost everyday at 12:10 or 7:30pm. They even have kids Zumba classes! The Zumba program blends easy-to-follow Salsa, Merengue, Mambo, Samba, Cha Cha, Cumbia, Reaggaeton, Flamenco and Bollywood dance steps with workout moves to create a unique, fun-filled fitness program where you’ll burn off your fats without even realising it! Better yet, you can trial the Zumba class for just $120.

Pure Yoga Dance Classes
Pure Yoga also offers a series of predominantly Indian themed dance fitness classes, for you mamas who like to groove Bollywood style! Try out Belly Dancing, Bollywood, Bollywood Fusion, Indian Dance and Indo Hip Hop for a fantastic way to shed some pounds while having a lot of giggling fun. All classes are open to beginners so don’t be afraid to enter unknown, body-shaking territory!

Pole Paradise Studio
Pole dancing may seem like a questionable form of physical exercise for some, given its kinky connotations, but it’s becoming increasingly popular and is an amazing alternative for women to loosen up, strengthen muscles and improve flexibility. Pole Paradise Studio, as suggested by its name, is best known for its fabulous pole dancing classes, but it also offers other exotic fitness classes such as lap dancing, aerial hoop and aerial silk classes.

Spinning / Cycling

TORQ
TORQ cycle is an indoor spinning centre that is designed for those that want a fusion of muscular toning and cardio activity. Sassy Mama’s favourite mama-friendly classes at Torq include: Torq de HK – a highly motivational class where your cycling progress is projected onto a screen so you can compare yourself to your fellow cyclists (bring your beau along for some extra competitive fun!); Torq Body – a cool blend of cycling, boxing, Muay Thai, Pilates and Yoga that will strengthen your core, sculpt your upper body and tone your arms in no time; and TORQVibe – a rhythmic cycling class that will wake you up and lighten your spirits on any groggy morning.

XYZ
If you want to get those endorphins flowing at the beginning of the day, XYZ’s early bird classes are guaranteed to do just that! Located right in New World Tower II on Queen’s Road Central, XYZ is a cool, concrete-interior modern spinning centre where classes take place in dark cycling rooms that project strobe lights across the room and blast clubbing music to motivate you during your workout. Early bird class customers receive a huge discount — $200 per class compared the normal $350 single class price. The class is offered on Tuesdays at 7:15am or on Thursdays and Fridays at 8am, perfect for a pre-work or post-school drop-off workout. If the early bird classes are too early, check out the Born To Move class (an intense cardio work out to release and recharge) which is offered throughout the day and the later Joy Ride class (to de-stress and tone up at the end of the day) that you can take your hubby to for half the price!

Spinworks
Known as the first and only spinning studio in Discovery Bay, Spinworks has just recently joined forces with The Hit Room to create a Bigger, Better and Stronger fitness centre. Spinworks, now known as The Hit Room’s ‘Spin Room’, offers cycling classes at all levels. Sassy Mama loves The Spin Room’s themed cycling classes, Spin-80s and Retro Spin, where you can experience a musical throwback to the 60s or the 80s while getting an intense cardio workout. You’ll be so busy rocking out to your favourite tunes, you won’t even realize that you’re burning calories! More intense cycling classes such as Spin-Power and Spin-Combo are also offered to those who are more experienced or looking for something a bit more challenging!
