A major challenge of Hong Kong life is allowing our children to just go ahead and play in our super-snug living environments. No sooner has this mama turned her back than the walls have been finger-painted, there’s glitter all over the lounge and some creative play dough additions to our antique side table. But without a backyard or outdoor area, how can I offer my kids the freedom I enjoyed as a youngster without losing my sanity (or my favourite rug)?
One of our latest discoveries though may be just the thing: Artful Kids. Run by artist and teacher Gail Deayton, Artful Kids offers a range of art classes for kids from a gorgeous studio in North Point (that happens to be super convenient to the MTR, btw).
Artful Kids offers a huge range of art classes and activities including painting, drawing, collage and sand and water play where kids strongly encouraged to make their own decisions regarding preferred materials and projects, tapping into their budding creativity to create something unique. The small classes of no more than 6 children at a time ensures hands-on attention and assistance where needed. Classes cater to three age groups, starting from babies up to 18 months, 1.5 to 3 years and 3 to 5 years. And as an added bonus, parents can relax on Artful Kids’ gorgeous sun terrace and enjoy complimentary refreshments (out of messy hands’ reach!) while their little ones paint up a storm indoors. Get their full class schedule here. For those with older kids, Gail also runs Hong Kong Art Tutoring for those who need extra studio time or assistance in building their portfolios from the same great studio space.
Oh – one final note to self: They also host art parties for both kids and adults, so mama gets to unleash her inner Monet while the kids create a Jackson Pollock!
And Psst: Enroll your kiddos for a fun Christmas Card – making session at Artful Kids. The littlies can use their creative skills to stick, print and paint their very own cards (while mama sips on a glass of vino). Check out the event details here.
