Your Guide to Thanksgiving in Hong Kong

EatPost Category - EatEatLearnPost Category - LearnLearn

There is never a time when I miss the USA more then on Thanksgiving Day.  Thinking about the fall weather, cozy clothes and an over-abundance of my Aunt Eileen’s mashed potatoes literally makes me swoon. Needless to say my first year living in Hong Kong I was a sad, sad girl come Thanksgiving morning. I didn’t make any effort that year because I kept comparing it to what I was missing back at home and looking back it was a horrible decision on my part.

Thanksgiving is all about giving thanks, eating tons of yummy food and spending it with people who you love which is pretty easy to create here in Hong Kong. You just need to know where to find the key ingredients and lucky for you we have done our research and are bringing you our top picks to help you create a fabulous and delicious Thanksgiving dinner this year whether it is in the comfort of your own home or at a restaurant.

Also, don’t worry if you can’t get your act together to do Thanksgiving on Thursday night. We find it perfectly okay to move Thanksgiving dinner to Friday and Saturday so you can enjoy the night and not have to think about heading to work or school runs the next day!

No pressure Mama, just make it look exactly like this, ok?

Planning on whipping up Thanksgiving dinner yourself this year?
Pop along to one of these supermarkets to stock up on all the Thanksgiving essentials – the food! You can purchase your turkey, grab the ingredients for homemade stuffing, select your veggies (Brussel Sprouts for me please!) and even grab your wine. One stop shopping at its best! We suggest ordering your turkey ahead to make sure you don’t have any disappointed guests at your dinner table!

Olivers, Shop 201-205, 2/F, Prince’s Building, 10 Chater Road, Central, Hong Kong, 2810 7719
Take advantage of the home delivery option because it is likely you will have tons of bags. Click here to check the delivery schedule to make sure you get your food on time. Olivers also has pumpkins that make excellent décor pieces. We have even seen some design blogs spray paint them different colours or even cover them with glitter!

City Super, Various locations throughout Hong Kong
If you are starved for time or don’t have an oven to cook your bird in then City Super can do it for you. Just make sure you give them three days notice. They can deliver your turkey and the rest of your order as well. Click here for delivery charges.

Great Food Hall, Basement, Two Pacific Place, Queensway, Hong Kong, 2918 9986
A friend who loves Thanksgiving even more than I do always purchases her turkey and fixings from Great Food Hall. They also have great high quality plastic plates and cutlery if you are having a huge crowd and need something that looks nice without spending tons of money on nice dinnerware you will only use once.

Need a bit of help from the experts?

I LOVE Thanksgiving but I am dreadful in the kitchen so I always need to scout out the experts to help me with my Thanksgiving parties. There are tons of catering options in town and here is a selection of our top picks. Nearly all of them have special Thanksgiving menus you can choose from and either have it delivered to your home or pick it up yourself. Order early as they book up fast.

Go Gourmet, Shop 5, Ground Floor, 17 Po Yan Street, Sheung Wan, Hong Kong
E: [email protected]

Go Gourmet is the catering arm of Magnolia Private Kitchen so expect some good Southern Food on the menu. They specialize in turkeys and traditional cornbread dressing (aka stuffing!).  A 14-18lb turkey will cost you $880. Email them to get their holiday menu for this year.

The Mandarin Cake Shop, Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong, 5 Connaught Road, Central, Hong Kong, 2825 4008
The Mandarin Cake Shop comes with super high marks from the Sassy team. For some of us it is the go to caterer for all our Thanksgiving needs. In true Mandarin Oriental style it comes in a beautiful hamper that looks like a huge hat box tied with ribbon. You can pick your hamper up in the morning and just reheat for dinner time! Click here for this year’s menu.

Main Street Deli, The Langham Hong Kong, 8 Peking Road, TST, Hong Kong, 2132 7898
We love Main Street Deli for a good American burger so we are trusting that they will put some good ole American love into their Thanksgiving-to-go menu. You can order a full dinner with all the fixings for 6-10 people ($1,488) or 16-20 people ($2,188) and the best part is that the menu is available until 31 December so if you like it for Thanksgiving you can make it easy and order it again for Christmas! They also deliver to Hong Kong Island as well.

Give me some of that Pecan Pie!

Thanksgiving is known for pies and boy do we have some good pie suggestions for you.

Tai Tai Pie Pies,
We love the name and the pies look simply delicious. Chef R.J. Asher learned to bake by watching his mom when he was a little boy in Illinois. Definitely our top pick this year!

Lily and Bloom, 5/F, LKF Tower, 33 Wyndham Street, Central, Hong Kong, 2810 6166
Lily and Bloom is offering freshly baked gourmet pies to go. You can choose from pecan, apple or pumpkin pies. The prices range from $85 for an Apple Pie to $145 for a Pecan Pie. We sampled the Pecan Pie the other night and it was yummy. It feeds about 4-6 people so we suggest ordering two so you have enough to go around!

Other Suggestions we like
Sift! (While it isn’t pie we can’t resist adding them here because they just opened a new location in Prince’s Building so you can pick up some cupcakes after your big shopping trip in Olivers!)

Let the Wine Flow…
People typically get very thankful once they have a few glasses of wine in them so if you need to stock up you can visit the wine sections in the above-mentioned supermarkets. We personally think it would be fun to order your wine from a wine distributor that has a strong American wine selection since this is an American Holiday. Here are our top picks for ordering American wine in Hong Kong!

Altaya
Altruistic
California Vintage (while this is a restaurant you can also order cases of their wine and have it delivered to your home)
Golden Gate Wines

Decorate!
Once you have your menu planned it is time to have fun with decorating. There is so much inspiration all over the internet so we say have fun with the décor and if you have a little one with some time on their hands put them to work and have them make turkey drawings out of their hands!

Flowers: Head to any local flower market in town and pick up some flowers in beautiful fall colours. Reds, oranges and greens flowers will make a beautiful centerpiece for your dinner.

Sham Shui Po or Pottinger Street: Add a bit of fun to your traditional napkins by picking up some ribbons in fall colours. Tie ribbon around each napkin to infuse a bit of colour to your dining table.

Serving Dishes: Best-case scenario is that you have enough nice dishes for your guests to eat on. If you are having a big crowd and need to pick up some extra dishes or cutlery and hate the idea of using paper or plastic then head to Ikea or Ichi Ni San on Elgin Street for low cost dish sets that you can use. Pan Handler in Prince’s Building and Pantry Magic in Sheung Wan are also great for stocking up on kitchen supplies!

Need Extras of Something: Shamrock Catering is the place to go if you need to order extra chairs, tables, serving dishes, wine glasses. If you need it they probably have it and can rent it to you for the evening.

Etsy: Etsy is fabulous for finding unique décor item done by amazingly crafty people. The prices are low and a lot of the designers ship to Hong Kong. I just purchased a “Give Thanks” banner that is super cute and I plan to hang it during my Thanksgiving dinner. This is the best place if you want to have some personal touches but no time for your own DIY project!

DIY: Have fun with your décor and put together some fun DIY pieces for your table. Ikea has some cheap frames ($7HKD) that I bought a bunch of and I am creating personalized signs to put on the tables the night of my Thanksgiving dinner. You can even get the kids to make a picture of what they are thankful for and put it at their place setting. I know I always love looking back at the things I drew when I was little and I am sure you will get a kick out of reading what they are thankful for when they are 20 years old!

Forget the prep – just eat out!
