Down by the cool of the rock pool

Being a Sassy Mama I thought I knew a lot of what Hong Kong had to offer. But nothing disabuses a mum quicker of her confidence than having teenage daughters! I soon figured out they know a lot more about where to go and what to do than many parents do, and they often take the lead on our social outings.

We spent the day at the rock pools in Discovery Bay and had one of the best afternoons all season. They are not only easy to get to, they are a fun way to cool off when the weather gets unbearable (aka: most of the year). We’ve come up with a short day trip for you and your kids (we suggest this plan for older kids, as many have been known to jump off the rocks into the pool) to have a fab day outside. But here’s a Sassy Mama Tip: a lot of people in HK have the same idea, so if you really want a quiet day here, head here during the week or in the off season.

Morning

Take the trip out to Discovery Bay in the early morning (see directions on how to get there below). Be sure to bring towels, bug spray (you’ll be around trees, rocks and, naturally, mosquitoes), sun cream, drinks and a snack, as you’ll be there for a while. Kids may want to wear water shoes, as the rocks can get a bit slippery. The water is really refreshing and cool, and the surrounding area is quite beautiful. If you don’t want to swim, there are areas where you can sit and watch the fun.

Sassy Mama Tip: The pools are somewhat deep but have shallow areas where there are rocks at the bottom. If your child wants to jump off into them, scan the area well to avoid any accidents. Do this at your own risk – we don’t recommend jumping, as swimming is the safest option.

Lunchtime

When you’re tired of swimming and need a break, walk back into town and head to the super family-friendly restaurant, Zaks (but don’t go overboard because no one likes swimming with a food baby). Featuring a bar, outdoor dining (for those soggy bathing suit bottoms), and gorgeous views, you’ll be happy you didn’t give up the serenity of the rock pools for something grungy.

Afternoon

Either head back to the rock pools or, this time, go spend the rest of day at one of the best family-friendly beaches in Hong Kong – Tai Pak Beach. Located just around the corner from the ferry terminal, this beach is good for all ages. It’s also close to the shops and restaurants, so you can easily grab snacks and drinks when the sun gets too hot. Check the ferry times for when your clan is ready to make the move back home. The kids will be exhausted (hello, easy bedtime!), which means a quiet night with your partner will be the ultimate ending to the fantastic day!

Getting there: From Central, take the ferry from Central Pier 3 to Discovery Bay.

Getting to the rock pools: Walk toward the Discovery Bay Golf Club (about 15 minutes) and follow the road. When you’ve hit the main road, turn right onto the hill. The rock pools are hidden in the trees and boulders off the side of the road. You’ll have to find a clearing and walk your way to the pools, but there are a couple of them and easy to spot.
