I’ve basically resigned myself to the fact that I will probably end up leaving HK knowing just taxi Chinese. And even that, I’m embarrassed to say, is sub-par. Thankfully Little J will have a better shot with her sponge-like toddler brain and Mandarin playgroups. She’s been completely obsessed with the Culture Cub DVDs and can point to her bi zi (nose) and the mǎ (horse) is officially her favorite animal.
Those who are keen to have bilingual kiddos should check out the iPhone app Chinese for Munchkins. With its flashcard pictures, sounds (from native speakers), and cute animation, as well as interactive Memory Match game, kids will be kept entertained while learning Mandarin and/or Cantonese.
Developed by Heidy and Lisa, two moms in Boston who are raising bilingual children, Chinese for Munchkins is an engaging and educational app for kids ages 2+.
If you want to check out the app for a preview before committing a whole US$1.99, there is a (free) Lite version as well. You can find Chinese for Munchkins on the iTunes store here.
