We love all things theatre and dance here at Sassy Mama, and we couldn’t wait to grab tickets for The Hong Kong Ballet’s new production of Don Quixote! This amazing stage performance is scheduled to kick off the 2014-2015 dance season and we have a feeling it’s going to be one of those not-to-be-missed productions!

Based off Miguel de Cervante’s novel written in 1605, the story follows the eponymous hero Don Quixote — a chivalrous knight who sets off in search of Dulcinea, the fictional maiden who he’s fallen in love with. On his journey, he meets the beautiful Kitri and mistakes her for his one true love! The comedy follows as Kitri and her beau Basilio have various comedic encounters with Don Quixote and his simple squire Sancho Panza.

Don’t mistake the fun and easy storyline for simplicity, however; the skills required to pull off the intricate dance steps and technically-demanding choreography in this performance are incredible. Giving her own interpretation to the piece with staging and additional choreography is Nina Ananiashvilli, recognised as one of the greatest prima ballerinas of the 20th century. The ballet will also guest star Matthew Golding, Principal Dancer of The Royal Ballet, and Anna Tsygankova, Principal Dancer of Dutch National Ballet, for the 23 August 7:30pm and 24 August matinee performances. For anyone who has a passion for dance or is just looking to witness a spectacular stage performance, this is a must-see show!

From beginning to end, the entire story is action-packed and full of laughter and humour. It’s guaranteed to engage the whole family and the kids will be absolutely delighted to witness the brilliant colour and spectacle. Don’t miss out on the opening night pre-performance talk to learn all about the incredible history of Don Quixote, spanning 400 years since the novel was first written in 1605. It’s free for ticket holders and is sure to set the stage for the grand performance!
