Comfy, cute and better for the planet? Yes, please! From eco-friendly fashion to organic cotton, small batch production and giving back to the community, here’s where to get sustainable children’s clothing in Hong Kong.

Sustainability isn’t a trend, it’s a way of life that takes us one step closer to protecting our wonderful world. But just what exactly constitutes as sustainable kids clothes and eco-friendly fashion? Simply put, sustainable garments are made from a single material, use eco-friendly fabrics, ethical resources and/or processes and have a low carbon footprint. It can also include how the brands might give back to the community. When it comes to restocking your children’s wardrobe, thinking green is definitely a great way forward. From comfy organic fabrics to environmentally sound threads, going eco-friendly in Hong Kong is easier than you might think with these stylish local brands.

Editor’s Note: The situation in Hong Kong regarding closures and restrictions on opening hours due to the coronavirus is constantly evolving. Many businesses are taking extra precautions, but please make sure you follow the latest government advice and stay home if you have recently travelled overseas, have interacted with anyone who has been away, or display any symptoms.

The Wee Bean sustainable kids clothes

The Wee Bean – Winner of the Hong Kong Smart Design Award (HKSDA) 2020 Green Award

Winner of the Hong Kong Smart Design Award (HKSDA) 2020 Green Award for incorporating environmentally sustainable principles in both design and production, The Wee Bean definitely knows a thing or two about sustainable kids clothing and fabrics. After the birth of her first baby, a gorgeous baby girl who suffered from severe eczema due to external pollutants, Amy Tang was inspired to create a range of skin sensitive baby products, including blankets, bibs, vests and more. These environmentally sustainable designs are made from a selection of 100% eco-friendly bamboo fibres and organic cotton and are hypoallergenic – perfect to keep your little one’s sensitive skin soft and not irritated. You can also shop organic cotton face masks; for every mask sold, another will donate another to the J Life Foundation Limited to distribute to children from low-income families in Hong Kong.

Pepper & Mint – Sustainable materials and helping stay-at-home parents in developing countries

Inspired by her two babies during late-night nursing sessions, Hong Kong Mama Conny Wong launched Pepper & Mint in 2018 and hasn’t looked back. The range of mini shoes and snuggle blankets boasts some seriously cute designs (cue Insta perfect shots!), using 100% premium cotton and “100% love”. It’s the brand’s passion to support and empower stay-at-home parents in developing countries, by teaching handcrafting skills and techniques. Because of this, mums and dads in Indonesia are enabled to earn a fair wage to support their own families. Purchase here directly support the livelihood of these local artisans, while a part of proceeds also goes to Volunteer for the Visayans, a Philippine-based charity for children (a cause close to Conny’s heart). Nothing goes to waste as fabric off-cuts are sent to another company to make baby bibs. Needless to say, we’re big fans of this brand in the Sassy Mama office so we were delighted to see these little gems included in the swag bags at the 2020 Oscars no less! With free shipping in Hong Kong, there’s also a flat rate to everywhere else in the world making it easy to share the love.

Malabar Baby sustainable kids clothes

Malabar Baby – Ethically sourced natural and organic materials with fair-trade factory collaborations

With beautiful items much loved by the Sassy Mama team, Malabar Baby was born in 2014 when Hong Kong Mama Anjali Harjani began a search for affordable, yet beautiful, natural baby linens after finding out that she was expecting. This international Indian mama grew up in the US, spent a part of her pregnancy in Mumbai (living in the Malabar Hill neighbourhood – hence the brand name) before moving to Hong Kong with her husband where their son was born. From bedding to swaddles, blankets to clothing and more, designs are internationally inspired and handcrafted using ethically sourced natural organic cotton. Using fine craftsmanship (and a huge emphasis on respect in the workplace) this brand definitely gives back to others with environmentally friendly initiatives, fair-trade factory collaborations and support of charities – including Mothers Choice right here in the city. Oh, and if it’s good enough for a royal baby’s first public outing (ahem, Meghan and Harry’s baby Archie, no less) then it’s good enough for us!

MulGlee – Handmade slow fashion for kids

If you’re looking for a beautifully designed dress for the little princess in your life look no further. This brand was started by Hong Konger Praveena in her home studio when making items for her daughter. All garments are handmade using natural fabrics (mainly cotton, but also linen and poplin) from Hong Kong, Australia and India (where Praveena is from). MulGlee will never use artificial fibres because this eco-friendly mama is conscious of the micro-plastics that synthetics release when washed. The cut of each piece is perfect and classic (not revealing at all) and you can even have an item custom made if you so wish. If the dress you want is in stock then it’ll be shipped to you as soon as possible (in a cotton bag – no plastic packaging here!), though if it’s not in stock it’ll be ready in a week or so, as items are never mass-produced in the fight to reduce waste.

Petit Tippi – Sustainable reusable diapers

So you’ve got the sustainable kids clothes sorted, but what about sustainable diapering? Petit Tippi stocks a huge range of cloth diapers, including handy newborn and starter kits in bold colours and pretty prints. If the thought of making the switch from disposables seems a little daunting, it runs how-to workshops at its Sai Ying Pun showroom (as well as other workshops on a whole range of equally useful topics). This is the go-to boutique for modern, stylish and eco-conscious parents looking for products you won’t find at your average baby store – perfect for gifting too!

Joe Sun – Recycled materials for sustainable kids swimwear

For Aussie mama, Alex Le Jeune, the connection of the beach is so strong that she dedicated her brand of beachwear to it. Joe Sun was born in 2019 offering timeless swimwear for children that’s sustainable, eco-friendly, kind to skin and, most of all, comfortable (oh, and effortlessly cool)! Materials used are made from ECONYL® regenerated polyamide, which is made from old carpets, fishing nets, plastic components and other fabric scraps – if that’s not recycling at its best we don’t know what is! The unisex items help parents reduce the amount of clothing needed for the kids, as you can pass the bathers on to the next child when the time is right. You won’t find any harmful chemicals here either (the UPF 50+ protection comes from the close-knit composition of the fabric) and there’s no excess packaging as items are packaged in recycled (and recyclable) envelopes.
