Summer’s been a long time coming this year, but now the sun has finally got his hat on, it’s time to start planning ahead for the fast-approaching school holidays! Here’s a comprehensive roundup of what’s on in Hong Kong for the kids this summer – be it sport, art, languages or whatever else takes their fancy… remember, busy kids = relaxed mama!

Creative Camps

Katterwall

Have a little Von Trapp under your roof? Then Katterwall – where it’s all about singing (and performing!) may be just the thing.  They’re offering a number of themed summer singing camps for kiddos 5-18 years old, including an ocean-themed camp for little ones with songs from The Little Mermaid, Lilo and Stitch, and Popeye. Mini movie fans can sing their heart out to songs from the big screen, like ‘You’ve Got a Friend in Me’ from Toy Story or ‘Let’s Go Fly a Kite’ from Mary Poppins. Kids Gallery has a whole host of workshops for your little ones with oodles of creative classes to choose from – film courses, dance classes, art, singing… the list goes on. We love that they have classes for kids has young as 12 months (baby ballet!), all the way up to 16 years. Little PIcasso

Little Picasso  

Little Picasso’s summer programme immerses your child in fun and creative activities with art projects covering the whole gamut include painting, drawing, as well as building recycled sculpture and clay works. Camps are led by professional artists and teachers and run during the mornings every week of July and August – and you can sign up for just one week or the whole summer, as each week is totally new and different. There’s also a Summer Fun with The Masters camp from 2 July to 20 August focusing on a (new!) Old Master every week like Paul Gauguin, Edward Hopper, Henri Matisse and Paul Klee, all of whom capture summer with their art.

Bebegarten

Bebegarten has put together a range of unique summer programmes and workshops for kids, parents and caregivers starting in July and August. There’s fun-sounding sessions such as  ‘The Boy Who Fell Out of the Book’ for 3-9 year olds, and even social skills workshops for 9-12 year olds; but also healthy snack workshops for parents, and nutrition sessions for helpers. British Tutors

British Tutors’ summer programme offers courses and workshops across a wide range of subjects such as debating, ancient history, poetry and creative writing, with sessions suitable for children ages 3 -16. Among the varied classes are an introduction to the language and culture of Ancient Pompeii, Rap and Rhyme for children as young as 5, and Mini Apprentice or Reporter courses and Outward Bound camps for older students. Brain Power RX

Open to children of all school ages from preschool to university, PowerBrain RX’s summer camps consist of a minimum of three, up to maximum of five classes per week. There are two-week introductory or four-week intensive camps to choose from, all of which aim to sharpen the brain’s potential so that children start the new school year with the extra advantage of finding learning easier, faster and more effective. Discovery Mind Primary School

DMPS offer a 3-week summer program with a different focus each week, including arts & crafts, games & activities and research & writing. ESF Summer Language Camps

ESF offer language programmes for kids of all ages from July to August at various locations around Hong Kong. Aimed to develop and strengthen language skills, there are courses grouped by age as well as specialist English programmes and beginner Spanish programmes. Mandarin Munchkins

Mandarin for Munchkins and Mandarin for Teens

Intensive classes that run 5 ½ days per week during July and August, with full flexibility to fit your schedule. The Learn & Play camps for children aged 1-8 (available at the Central or DB campuses) are suitable for kids with or without basic knowledge of Mandarin, as well as children visiting from overseas. Children learn through hands-on activities, such as arts and craft, music, stories, drama, audio-visuals, games and singing. For older children, camp programmes also include short outings where they are introduced to interesting attractions in Hong Kong -museums, beaches, parks – which they then document in a journal back at the classroom.

The Open Classroom

The Open Classroom (formerly L.E.A.P.), engages kids with fun, interesting topics in their 5-day workshops, all designed to build skills in public speaking, creativity and teamwork. Their programmes for older kids are all about experiential learning with guest speakers from all walks of life, e.g. an animal rescuer and an animated film maker. They also offer summer SAT and SSAT prep classes, intensive writing programmes, and leadership courses for tween and teens – including one led by Ivy League grads aimed to prepare students for university and beyond. There’s lots on offer from SPRING Learning this summer. Sunkids

Sunkids offers bilingual and Mandarin language camps for 3-7 year olds, with fun activities taught by native speakers. There are also art camps with a different theme every week and they provide English reading and Chinese Pinyin and Phonetics workshops to strengthen children’s practical language skills. The Child Development Centre at Matilda Hospital

The Child Development Centre at Matilda offers summer camp programmes run by qualified special education teachers, designed for children ages from 18 months to 6 years with additional educational needs. Camps are held in Wanchai and at the Matilda Hospital, and are focused on anything from speech therapy to social skills. There are a wide variety of group classes, as well as individual speech and occupational therapy sessions and individual education services for your child’s specific needs. Another unique offer is a primary prep course for little ones ages 4-6 years with lessons built around important prerequisites for primary school, as well as building increased independence in the classroom. Dagis HK

Inspired by the Swedish early childhood education programme, Dagis HK is one of the only outdoor activity camps in Hong Kong.  Providing a relaxed environment for children aged 1-5, where the focus is on play and exploration, they promote curiosity, independence and creativity – and we like that they have a special focus on treating girls and boys equally. Sessions take place – rain or shine! – at the Chung Hom Kok Playground and Beach, or in Clearwater Bay based out of Garden House Preschool, and their summer camp will start in July.

Flex Studio

FlexKids offer three-to-five-day intensive camps in June and July. Kids can learn a complete foundation in traditional Brazilian Capoeira and yoga, aiming to create body awareness and confidence during the June Capoeira Yoga camp for kids aged 5-8 years old. Alternatively they can learn to groove to Gangnam Style, One Direction or point their toes to Cinderella or Alice in Wonderland in the July dance camps for kids aged 2-5.

Minisport

After exploding onto kids coaching the scene last year with bright equipment and fun, positive coaches, Minisport is launching a range of summer courses on Kowloon side this summer. Whether you have a little tot or a spurting seven year old, Minisport is a great option for kids’ sports coaching. Minigames courses for 3-5 year olds send children on missions to save toy animals and other fun themed activities that promote physical activity. Treasure Island

Have a water baby on your hands? Surf Camp, open to children ages 5-9 years is a fun day camp at scenic Pui O beach where the kiddos get to hang ten while learning about the environment and ocean awareness. If they’re a little bit older (9-15 years,) and want to ride the waves, they can join the intermediate camp with daily surfing lessons and an overnight stay in a tent. For 9-18 year olds with a sense of adventure, the very aptly named Adventure Explorers Camp gets them surfing, sailing, rock climbing, hiking, kayaking, mountain biking and an overnight camping trip!
