Make sure you show your mum the appreciation she deserves!
Mother’s Day in Hong Kong falls on Sunday, 12 May this year, so if you haven’t already started looking for presents, now is the time! We’ve deliberately not included the old faithful options of flowers and perfume in this list (which are always very welcome gifts) and have tried to cater to a range of budgets. Mamas if you see something that you would like yourself, make sure you start dropping some heavy hints to the hubby (or better still, just present him with this guide). Happy shopping!
kikki.K is our go-to for stylish stationery, so this memory book for mum ($150) caught our eye as we were browsing the site for inspo. This beautiful hardback comes complete with stickers, as well as pages for both mamas and their little ones to fill in. The kids can list the ways their mum makes them feel better and why they think she is amazing, as well as write about their favourite memories and the things that remind them of her (just make sure you have the tissues handy when you present this one!).

If you’re looking for a small token for the kids to give to mum, how about a Little Miss mug from The Refinery. Take advantage of its bespoke service by selecting your favourite Little Miss character and adding a personalised name to the mug (from $220). Or if you’d rather just pick one off the shelf its Hug in a Mug ($200) expresses the perfect sentiment for Mother’s Day and will bring a smile to her face every time she reaches for an emergency caffeine fix.

A personalised present is always a sure-fire hit, so why not head over to Bespoke Baby Books (founded by a Hong Kong papa) and get creative. We love its wallet-friendly photo books (which start from $350). The easy-to-use templates make it incredibly simple to upload your favourite family pictures to create your masterpiece, which is sure to bring some tears to Mum’s eyes. It’s worth noting the company also does personalised greetings cards (from $41), as well as mugs, coasters, cushions and wall canvases.

Hourglass’s popular No.28 lip treatment oil now comes in a choice of five colours. It’s likely to become a handbag staple for mum, with its 24-karat gold-plated tip bringing an extra touch of glam to her makeup bag. It contains three active ingredients which are said to be anti-aging, as well as being jam-packed with essential oils, plant oils and vitamins to help soften the lips. We love the Icon shade (a bluey red) and Bare (a peachy pink).

Eco-lifestyle brand CAYA is the brainchild of HK mumtrepreneur, Charu Mehrotra. Her aim is to promote handmade, natural and sustainable clothing (we can’t argue with that), and we think her pashminas make perfect presents. The foil patterned scarf in sky blue ($600) is a great wardrobe staple, ideal for adding some glitz to any outfit during the day or night. We also recommend checking out the beautiful sandals (from $400), complete with intricate beading, tassels and pom poms!

This Tea Party Hamper ($778) contains lots of treats for tea-loving mamas with a sweet tooth. It includes a set of gorgeous Kikkerland teacups, some rejuvenating tea, as well as a chocolate bar, honey, a wooden honey stirrer and English artisan biscuits. It all comes beautifully presented in a marble gift box. This present has also got the seal of approval from EcoDrive because it doesn’t contain unnecessary plastic packaging, so you’ll also be doing your bit for conscious consumerism.

We don’t have much room in Hong Kong flats, so sometimes rather than gifting physical items, it’s nice to go for an experience instead. We think a great Mother’s Day gift would be to treat the whole family to tickets to see Matilda the musical (family packages for 2 adults and 2 children from $1,980). Okay, it’s not rolling into town until Friday, 20 September until Sunday, 6 October, but it’s always nice to have something to look forward to. Based on Roald Dahl’s popular book and with music by Tim Minchin, it’s no wonder this show has already won over audiences in London’s West End and on Broadway!

For a truly thoughtful gift, we absolutely adore the birthstone necklaces from Oolive Jewelry (from $820). They are handcrafted by artisan jewellers using sterling silver and 18k gold, with precious and semi-precious gems. They look great on their own or layered, so once you’ve got mama her own birthstone, you can also commemorate other significant life events, such as children being born or wedding anniversaries (the options are endless). We like that Oolive also gives back, by donating 10% of the cost of the necklace to support women in need.

We are big fans of John Masters Organics here at Sassy Mama. Its natural body, face and hair products not only smell divine, but you have the added bonus of knowing you’re not putting any nasties on your skin. So we think its Mother’s Day Kit ($960) will be a big hit. It contains Nourish Facial Oil with Pomegranate (this is one of the brand’s hero products and is packed with antioxidant fruit and flower oils), Calendula Hydrating and Toning Mask (for when mum gets some downtime) and Firming Eye Gel.

We’re lusting after Dooney and Bourke’s Florentine medium satchel in natural ($3,735). There’s also a small size available for $3,453. You can’t go wrong with gifting a bag in our opinion, and the timeless style of this one means it’ll never go out of fashion. Its detachable strap makes it ideal for busy mums on the go. It can be flung over the shoulder during the day, or carried by its straps for date night. And we all know how hard-wearing leather is, so it’s likely to last for years to come.

Husbands take note, if you want to earn yourself serious brownie points with your wife this Mother’s Day, why not invest in a pair of Jenny Yang heels for her (classic collection from around $4,000). They tick all the boxes when it comes to comfort and style, plus there are lots of colours, so whether she’s into neutrals or prefers more statement brights, you won’t be short of choice (we have our eye on the light lavender, ocean green and aspen yellow). Each pair is custom made to guarantee the perfect fit, and you can choose from three different heel heights (7cm, 9cm or 10.5cm).
