Pioneering a unique form of music technique, leading vocal group Naturally 7 is making its way to Hong Kong this month.
You’ve heard of jazz, country, pop, classical, a cappella… but have you heard of “Vocal Play”? Awarded the CARA (Contemporary A Cappella Recording Awards) and with over 6 million hits on YouTube, Naturally 7 has pioneered a unique form of musical technique called “Vocal play”. Not only do they sing, but they can also create the sound of every background instrument using only their voices – be it the drum set, guitar, harmonica or even DJ scratching!
Set to perform live in Hong Kong later this month, the show is sure to be a hit with the whole family. We spoke to Naturally 7 about their unique musical technique, creative process and what they have in store for their Hong Kong show.
You’re best known for your “Vocal Play” music technique. Can you describe the technique to us?
A cappella is when you sing without instruments…Vocal Play is when you become the instrument. The goal is to sound like a band with recognizable instruments.
What inspired you to develop this technique?
We wanted to do something different from everyone else. We wanted to be known for something special. So we took a little bit from all the music around us and discovered something new.
Tell us how Naturally 7 was formed. When did you start making music and performing together?
We started in 1999 in a local church with just friends, entered a cappella competition that Summer and won. We then went on to make our first album (CD) in 2000 and became professionals in 2001.
Why do you think so many people resonate with your music?
We have done over 10,000 shows in 67 countries and regions. Everyone loves the human voice and to see how versatile it can be.
How would you describe your creative process behind making new music?
We’re always looking for new ways to use the voice and present music. Whether original or cover, we want it to be something you have never experienced. To accomplish that, you have to be open to many types of music so you can blend it together as you wish.
Can you tell us more about the new music you’ve created specifically for the Asia tour?
We have developed a themed show around great movie songs that we enjoy or that have changed the industry. It’s exciting because this will be our first time doing a themed show on any subject!
