Sassy Scoop: Katterwall are in fine voice for the new academic year

It’s fair to say that many of us here at Sassy Mama prefer to restrict our singing to shower time, but there’s nothing we love more than the sound of our kids belting out a tune, which is why we’re excited about the upcoming programmes kicking off at Katterwall!

And with the beginning of a new school term, there are plenty of opportunities for dinky divas and tiny tenors to get warbling. Whether they are seasoned performers, or just taking their first nervous steps into the spotlight, the friendly folks at Katterwall can help kids gain confidence, work as a team… not to mention learn some top tunes too!

Since 2002 the Katterwall Vocal Academy has encouraged Hong Kong students to develop and nurture their love of song in a supportive, well rounded and fun musical environment. The inspiring teaching team are all performers in their own rights, both here in the ‘Kong and overseas, giving them a unique insight on the reality of performing to a live audience. Courses encourage kids to explore a wide range of different musical styles in order to find their perfect fit and there’s something here for every musical passion, from show tunes to sopranos.

Classes are age-appropriate, and include the following programmes:

Hullabaloo

For kids from 5-7 years who love to sing, dance and explore music, this weekly choir-based class is perfect to help them dip their toes into a musical future. There’s no Cowell-style audition required here (phew!) so little ones can focus on perfecting some (often challenging) musical projects like learning complex harmonies and busting some cool choreographed moves in front of theatre audiences! Underpinning all of this is fun, friendship and the foundations of a musical education. Weekly classes begin on Thursday 5 September 2013 from 4.30 – 5.30pm at the Katterwall Studio in Sheung Wan.

Katterwall Children’s Music Theatre

Once your little singers are well and truly lost in music, this course will help them to take things a step further, building confidence and creativity. Designed for kids aged from 8-11 years, this fun programme uses drama games, scripts and song to help fire those little imaginations and provide them with the tools to express themselves through song. Each term culminates in an open show, where parents can watch their youngsters perform everything they have learned on stage (tissues at the ready, mama!).

Weekly classes kick off on Saturday 7 September from 10.30–11.45am, at the Katterwall Studio.

One-on-one singing lessons

If your older child is studying music as a school subject, a little personalised coaching can be just the thing to take their knowledge to the next level. Ideal for kids aged 11 and over, lessons combine all the essentials like warm-ups, sight singing and practical theory, and can be tailored to any upcoming school or music exams, such as IB, GCSE, Trinty exams or ABRSM. Young performers will learn songs across genres including classical, jazz, opera, pop and musical theatre, giving them the skills to hit those high notes on exam day. As classes are tailored to each individual’s needs, it is best to contact Katterwall direct to discuss your tuition requirements.

If they still have a song in their hearts that is just bursting to get out, Katterwall run workshops throughout the year, with upcoming sessions including musical theatre audition technique for autumn 2013, and mic workshops throughout the year.
