Cover your ears mamas, teen screams are a’coming…The boys from 5SOS will be in the 852 and we’re super excited!

Guess what, Sassy Mamas? Famed pop-rockers 5 Seconds of Summer (5SOS) are coming to Hong Kong this March, so gear up and put your leather jacket on, stick some pink hair extensions in (we’re love the idea of getting all matchy-matchy with Michael!) and wear those funky boots with pride… especially if you have a tween or teen who adores the Aussie musicians!

Thursday, 3 March marks their first performance in Hong Kong in support of their second album Sounds Good, Feels Good, and we’re so excited to welcome them to town! We sat down with Luke from the band in the run up to their Asia leg of their world tour, Sounds Good, Feels Live. Check out what he had to say!

Where in the world are you?
We’re currently in Los Angeles, chilling and hanging out.

Are you guys excited for your Asia tour?
I’m really excited to play some new songs but most importantly, I’m excited to play in new cities. We’ve never played in some of the cities that we’re going to.

Which cities are you must excited to explore?
The really cool thing about Asia is that wherever you go, everywhere is different. It’s going to be awesome to go everywhere.

What do you miss most about home when you’re on tour?
We miss family and friends. We miss doing normal things. I miss knowing where everything is – where the coffee mugs are, for example. I miss my own bed. It’s the little things like that.

5 Seconds of Summer in Hong Kong - 1

How has your life changed over the last few years?
We’ve released two albums and we’re about to tour, so I think the best is yet to come. We had an amazing year and we toured most of the world off the back of our first album. I’m so excited to visit places we’ve yet to go to. The best is yet to come, if I’m honest.

You were discovered through YouTube and social media. With so much on the Internet, how can other artists stand out and get noticed?
Everything we did wasn’t perfect. It was more about how we played as opposed to having a perfectly crafted sound. As you grow as an artist, you learn to perfect that over time. We had something that we really believed in, it was different to a lot of stuff that was out at the time. I think if you have something special, you just run with it.

You’ve written with McFly, Busted, Good Charlotte… is there any one else on your bucket list you’d like to collaborate with?
Billie Joe from Green Day and Nikki Sixx from Motley Crue.

There’s a distinct Australian attitude behind the name “Sounds Good, Feels Good”; how did you come up with the album name?
We were recording a song called “Hey Everybody” doing gang vocals, which means we had a group singing backing vocals along with us. When we had everything we needed, we just looked at each other and went “Okay, sounds good, feels good”, and the mic was still on. It’s actually on the start of the song. And that’s how we came up with the album name.

Any plans for a new album yet?
We did a few sessions the other day, writing a few things. I don’t know if it’ll all get done this year. We’re trying new things out, new writers, experimenting a little bit. I think we have time to do that right now. I can’t say exactly what’s going to happen and when.

If you had to play one song for the rest of your career, what would it be?
I’d like to play Vertigo by U2.

If you could be in any other band, which would you join and why?
Foo Fighters. I want to play drums with Foo Fighters and Dave Grohl, even though I’m not a drummer.

If you weren’t in a band, what would you be doing instead?
I used to play in pubs before we were in a band. I’d like to be a song writer, but I don’t know if that would be possible. I like being creative. The band has given me the opportunity to do that.

You guys have such a distinct fashion sense. How do you think your style has evolved?
We do have a stylists, but it’s a joint effort. They’ll ask us what kind of things we’d like to wear, and they’ll bring it back for us to decide. It’s a collaborative effort.

5 Seconds of Summer in Hong Kong - 2

Favourite season?
I quite like summer…

Favourite song or guilty pleasure of the moment?
Nick Jonas’ song, maybe.

Favourite dance move?
The running man.

Who’s the best surfer out of all of you?
I’d say me. Ash and I are the only ones who’ve really surfed. I’ve only surfed about three or four times, and he’s surfed about twice. So I’m taking that one.

Who does the most writing?
I think it’s pretty even. I like to write by myself when we have time off. But in a band, it’s definitely an even spread.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
I like to go to the beach, see my friends, grab a bite and hang out. You miss out a lot of stuff being on the road, so when you go home, you just want to hang out and do normal things with your friends.

Any final words?
I’m really excited to get out there and play some shows with all of you. I hope you love the new album and you love the show!
