Sassy Mama’s Family-friendly Playlist

We’ve heard the cries from some of you mamas… just what music do you play in the car that’s suitable for the little ones? Half of it is profanity-laden, the other half doesn’t really have an appropriate message for impressionable young ears. We’ve rounded up the top 10 songs you can chuck on a CD or on a curated playlist on your smartphone that are trendy enough for you and catchy enough for the kids to fall in love with. Here goes:

1. Happy by Pharrell
Bubba will be boppin’ and clappin’ along to this one (and probably getting all the words wrong like we do!) like a room without a roof.

2. Shake It Off by Taylor Swift
Great for mini-Swifties, this one is super catchy. Although… safety warning: make sure your kiddo does the sitting-down-with-the-seatbelt-on dance as they’ll definitely want to throw some shapes in the back seat to this tune.

3. Uptown Funk by Mark Ronson feat. Bruno Mars
Ah, we adore Ellen DeGeneres so much, and one reason is because there’s at least one play of this Bruno Mars tune each show. The beat is just so #ThrowbackThursday.

4. What Makes You Beautiful by One Direction
If you’ve got a tween girl, prepare to get schooled on some 1D. You may have had to console them when Zayn left the group, but that doesn’t mean their songs have changed much in the last couple of months. If we really had to pick, we’d go with their very first single from when they were fresh-faced and straight off UK’s X-Factor…

5. Diamonds by Rihanna
Nope, let’s keep the rendition of “B**** Better Have My Money” for drinks at the bar on a Friday night, but this one will have you and the kiddos shinin’ bright… just like a diamond…

6. We Are The Champions by Queen
Driving your little champion back from a football game? This is definitely one for the car journey home!

7. Counting Stars by OneRepublic
Count the beat to this one as the tempo goes up and up and up along with Ryan Tedder’s silky voice. Then count the stars to go with it!

8. Price Tag by Jessie J featuring B.o.B.
It’s not about the money, money, money, it’s also about making the world dance… Jessie J’s got a moral message for both mama and tot. Also we’ve heard of kids asking for the “money money” song in the car on the way to school; straight from the horse’s mouth.

9. Walkin’ on Sunshine by Katrina & The Waves
WOAAAHHH, this one is an oldie but a goodie and totally upbeat and uplifting. It’s a great one to sing along to.

10. Eye of the Tiger by Survivor
Put this on and check your mirror, mama. You’ll see a lot of air guitar going on in the backseat. It’s going to be hard not to join in, so just remember to keep both hands on the wheel!
