Pregnancy and childbirth are emotional times, heightened to the extreme during these COVID times. Through the anxiety, you want that expert support.

Sofie Jacobs, founder and head midwife, has over 23 years of experience in helping new parents in Europe and Asia along their pregnancy journey. She adopts an open-minded and non-judgemental approach to go beyond traditional midwife support. There is a particular focus on postpartum wellbeing, including planning your return to work and maximising your parental leave as well as making partners feel addressed and involved.

Sassy Mama’s very own Partnerships Manager Emily, tried out the online course for herself.

Had you taken any antenatal classes before? How did these differ from those?

My partner and I had already completed a 12-hour in-person antenatal course that was quite comprehensive. So for us, this was intended to be more of a refresher. Having said that, there were some aspects of the Urban Hatch course that we thought were really useful (that were not covered in the other courses). We really appreciated the partner tips, which were presented as a separate video at the end of each module especially designed for the birthing partner as to how they can best support you (and themselves and what to expect).

The PDF downloadables and Cheat Sheets which summarised all the main important points from the module in one place also came in handy. We printed these and stuck some around the flat to remind us of things like labour positions when the time comes.

What did you like most about the Urban Hatch course?

The modules on postpartum were really useful as this is something that is overlooked by the baby books and typical antenatal classes. It’s important to be aware and prepare for life after the baby both in terms of the physical changes and mental challenges that lie ahead and the course really did a good job at this.

I really liked how short and concise the videos were (there is a total of six modules and each module comprises of around five videos each approximately 3-6 minutes in length) making them super digestible. They were easily accessible and mobile-friendly – great for people that don’t have a lot of time. I even watched some on my daily commute!

The ability to rewatch and go back to the videos over the course of the membership was also really useful. I’ve bookmarked the breastfeeding module so I can watch it once our baby is here. Right now I am trying to get to grips with the idea, but it’s hard to understand the practicalities until you’re actually trying it!

Who would benefit from the course / Would you recommend this course to others?

This course would really benefit any first-time parents, especially those that have not done any other antenatal classes or parents who need a refresher. It’s great for those who are time-poor as the videos are concise and short, and you can get away with cramming it all in. You could even complete them all when you start maternity leave two weeks before bub is due (although, not recommended!).
