Fill those lungs with crisp, fresh mountain air.

One of the great things about living in the 852 is its close proximity to outdoor activities (hiking in the hills or swimming in the sea anyone?), combined with a world of opportunities for children to thrive in the art and design world. But what if we told you there’s a fantastic opportunity this summer that’ll truly immerse your kids in the raw beauty of nature, at the same time as expanding their creative talents? Look a little further afield (to Switzerland to be exact) and check out The Mountain Lab’s International Junior Summer School!

The Mountain Lab Summer School

Boötes (which is a Hong Kong-based charitable organisation aiming to connect people, while delivering a diverse array of educational, cultural, design, and architectural solutions) has teamed up with Zurich University of the Arts to offer students from ages 15 to 18 the amazing opportunity to travel to Switzerland for this immersive summer school.

If your teens love being surrounded by nature and are fascinated by arts and design, they’ll enjoy this chance to learn directly from the teachers at the University, with workshops taking place at the HIF campus in Ftan (East Switzerland). Your teens will be able to spread their wings amidst the breathtaking rolling mountain landscape, and take their pick from any two of the following art and design workshops on offer:

  • Video Production
An introduction to professional film making with script writing, camera and sound technology, as well as how to operate devices.
  • Photography
Learn to build a camera obscura, that’ll help with understanding the principles of photography.
  • Design
Build up a portfolio of work to strengthen experience for future college applications.
  • Painting
Learn basic painting techniques and different graphical methods, such as illustration, tracing, drawing and collage.

The courses alone will keep your kids entertained, but with excursions to explore other areas of Switzerland, and a variety of evening and weekends arts and sports activities as well, they’ll come back with more life experience than when they left! As university days fast approach, The Mountain Lab is the perfect chance for your young adults to delve deeper into topics they love. This independent experience away from home is sure to give them a summer they’ll never forget!
