The Bump: Seneria Shum

MamaPost Category - MamaMama - Post Category - The BumpThe Bump

We’re back with another baby bump, mamas! This time we’re talking to Seneria Shum about the rocky road to motherhood, which for her was paved with maxi dresses, sleepless nights and oddly enough – durians. She gave birth to a beautiful baby boy called Quintus on 13 July, 2014, weighing in at a healthy 3.12kg.

What was your reaction when you first found out you were pregnant?
Lots of flashing thoughts and sleepless nights!

Your funniest memory over the nine months?
When the doctor told us, “It’s a boy!”, my husband’s reaction was along the lines of “Ahhhh…” – ouch. He was happy, but he was looking forward to a daughter more.

Any great books and resources that prepared you for when your baby arrived?
A Chinese Montessori book and of course, Sassy Mama!

What do you think every woman should know before getting pregnant?
That they should enjoy every single stage with the baby, even if it involves hectic and stressful sleepless nights. You should take as many pictures as you can because babies just grow too fast! When you look back, you’ll always feel like you’ve never taken enough pictures or spent enough time with them.

What was the easiest trimester and which one proved most difficult?
The second trimester is always the honeymoon stage: there’s no more morning sickness, there’s lots of eating, and it’s not too bothersome to travel around and go about your normal routine! The third was the hardest of all… you’re expecting the arrival soon and your anxiety levels are at an all-time high. I had lots of sleepless nights due to back pain and discomfort with the big bump.

Did you follow a fitness programme while you were pregnant?
I joined Pure prenatal yoga once I hit 12 weeks. It helps to relieve backpain and stress.

Any fashion tips and tricks for maternity dressing?
Buy lots and lots of maxi dresses! You will regret it if you don’t dress yourself up. I feel like I didn’t take enough beautiful pictures with my bump. Every day of the pregnancy was precious and I still miss it sometimes.

What did you struggle with most during your pregnancy?
I was not allowed to travel during the third trimester. That was the most painful, dreadful 12 weeks of my life.

What are your hopes and dreams for your baby?
My only hope is that my lovely darling will grow up healthy and happy. Nothing melts my heart more than his genuine smile. I’m dreaming of going to Disneyland with him every summer because that was my childhood dream, ha!

Name a mama you find inspiring and why?
My own mum. She’s always so patient with my baby’s hysterical cries. It would have been an unbelievable first month without my mum’s help.

What are your thoughts about finding out the sex in advance?
I actually wanted to keep it secret till the last moment. But the people around me were too eager to know, especially my in-laws.

Did it take you some time getting pregnant or were you one of those mamas who got lucky on the first try?
FIRST TRY! And right before the wedding too!

What kind of birth did you have?
I had a hospital epidural.

What helped you get your groove back after being pregnant?
Mostly yoga and lots of exercise.

Any local businesses that made your pregnancy journey easier?
I loved Clarins prenatal massage and Sense of Touch‘s massages as well.

Did you have any weird cravings?
I used to hate durians, but turned out to be a durian fan during my pregnancy. That was a huge shock for me. I don’t actually eat them anymore!
