Nothing is more precious than your new bundle of joy but gifts are always welcome!

Women are amazing. They grow a whole new human in nine months and then squeeze the little beings into the world – either through the sunroof (a c-section), or in a way that’s similar to pushing a watermelon through a drinking straw. No matter how your little love bug comes out, one thing is for sure: mamas rock! That’s not to say that it’s a walk in the park for the devoted other halves, supporting their women patiently while holding their hand and trying to keep everyone calm. Though, when a woman goes through such a life changing experience, a little push present from her significant other to say “well done you!” might go a very long way. Here are some suggestions to point you in the right direction.

Nika K Jewellery

Niya K

Growing a little one and then bringing them into the world is one life event that’s not easily matched (unless you have another baby, of course!). For such a momentous occasion, you’ll want a timeless gift, and nothing says forever better than diamonds. To find the perfect offering head to Niya K, the Hong Kong based jewellery brand that specialises in crafting bespoke diamond and gemstone jewellery tailored to you (and your price point!).

The designer believes that personal jewellery should have a story, so you can work together with your ideas to tailor your gift, ensuring complete satisfaction. If designing is not for you, don’t worry, you’ll find a collection of beautiful ready-made pieces to choose from as well. With prices ranging from $2,000 to $30,000 for the ready-to-wear collection, having a very special reminder of bringing your little one into the world won’t break the bank either.

Creating a custom-made piece takes less time than you might think, with items ready within two to three weeks (designing and shipping for international clients is also available). This one-of-a-kind gift is ideal to celebrate your one-of-a-kind bubba and mama! So what are you waiting for? Treat your life-giving goddess to a sparkling gem that’ll make her smile every day, just like your mini-me.

New Nightclothes

As most new mamas can attest, there will be a fair amount of time spent in PJs in the weeks following the baby’s birth. Make getting up in the middle of the night a little more bearable by dressing in some new nightclothes. Comfort levels can still be maintained while dealing with 3am feeds, just slightly jazzed up for mama’s feel good factor. Opt for a comfortable fabric that can be washed time and time again like this Dotted Short Pyjama by kate spade, or this Midnight Bakery cropped set (complete with matching robe). A cotton dressing gown is comfy yet stylish, or go all out with a luxury pure silk robe to help her feel like a million dollars (even if she’s not had time to brush her hair all day!).

Engraved Jewellery

Engrave the details of your little one’s entrance into the world, be that the date and time of birth, geographical location or your new arrival’s initials, in a memento that mama can wear day after day. This Keepsake Locket from the Hatton Jewellery Institute here in Hong Kong doubles up as you can also insert a cute picture. The personalised bracelets, pendants and rings at Monica Vinader allow for a name, message or hand-drawn doodle to be added. Or Aliya Fine Jewellery can work on a bespoke push present piece. And though you might not be thinking about a baby brother or sister just yet (!), consider looking for options that might allow for additional details to be added at a later date.

Although not a personalised piece, this maternity necklace from Ilado is a lovely idea to gift before baby makes their way into the world. The pendant, which hangs perfectly over the growing bump, has a soft and soothing chime noise that baby-to-be will become accustomed to, helping them to feel comforted by the familiar noise when on the outside.

The Night Sky Star Map

Personalised Star Map

While you might remember the place of your baby’s birth quite clearly, why not also immortalise the exact formation of the night sky the moment your planets aligned. Create a personalised star map, from The Night Sky, that shows the alignment of the stars on the date and location of when your mini me burst into this world. You can also add a personal message to mama as well.

A Tattoo

If you want a daily reminder of your beautiful little being, pull out the big guns and get inked! You don’t have to go too big (unless you want to of course), but perhaps a discreet symbol, your little one’s initials, or the date and time of birth. Maybe even the geographical co-ordinates in Morse code? Resembling an art gallery rather than a tattoo parlour, Star Crosses Tattoo on Sun Street, Wan Chai, comes recommended, but there are plenty of reputable options in the city as mentioned in this guide on our sister site, Sassy Hong Kong.

Jewcells Jewellery breastmilk jewellery push present

Breast Milk Jewellery

Yep – you read that correctly! What better way to immortalise this special time in a mamas life than with the life-giving liquid itself? There are several online options for this, though shop local with Jewcells Jewellery, founded by Hong Kong mama Cynthia Lui. On graduating in Jewellery and metalwork from Sheffield Halama university in the UK, she came to Hong Kong with the aim of making jewellery that tells a story. Following the birth of her daughter in 2018, she was inspired to take that one step further and breast milk gems came to life. You can either order online and send your milk to the team, or try your hand at making rings, pendants and bracelets in the Breast Milk Gem Workshop; you can even get matching mini and me sets for mum and the little one.

Wireless Headphones

Ok, so technically this gift idea is one that might be useful before your little one is born. If you’re a hypnobirthing mama, a pair of wireless headphones is a great push present idea to prevent you from getting tangled up in the throngs of a contraction. Tens machine wires, baby monitor straps and headphone cables is a recipe for potential disaster! These Sony WH-1000XM3 ones are also noise cancelling, so she can tune out everything else and focus on her breathing or hypnobirthing audio. This is also a useful gift post-birth so mama can do some mediations once the bubba is finally asleep!

Nordstrom backpack

A Stylish Backpack

Mama will need to put more than just her phone, wallet and keys in her handbag from now on (think bottles, teething toys, nappies…the list is endless!). Treat her to a stylish diaper bag that looks like a regular backpack, like this convertible diaper bag by Freshly Picked (with cross body or side strap options), or a regular on-trend backpack (like this leather Nordstrom bagthat has enough pockets to hold all the essentials.

Birthstone Jewellery

Following the birth of Princess Charlotte, Prince William apparently gifted Catherine a pair of green tourmaline and green amethyst Kiki McDonough earrings to match the little princesses birthstone (emerald). For something along the same lines, how about a birthstone necklace with mama’s and baby’s stones attached? Shop yellow, white or rose gold necklaces from Natasha Schweitzer, an Australian-based jeweller who ships to Hong Kong. Or take a look at Alluressories with free shipping to Hong Kong on orders over $500.

Other Push Presents

Alexander McQueen scarf

Splashing out on a push present that’ll bring a smile to her face when stepping out with baby in tow, like this Alexander McQueen heart motif silk scarf paired with a pair of comfy yet on-trend pumps. And as mama’s time in the morning will be dramatically reduced, anything that’ll speed up the getting ready process is always welcome! Like a Dyson Supersonic hairdryer that’ll have her hair dry and fabulous faster than you can say “the baby needs another diaper change”.

Cute matching mama and me T-shirt sets are great for family photos and go well with these “If you can read this, bring my mum a coffee” socks; practical and adorable! Or get creative with a homemade voucher (complete with baby’s hand print) for a romantic dinner, spa day or mini staycation?

And don’t worry if there’s too much going on to organise something in time for the birth or just after; push presents after one, five or even seven years will mean just as much!
