Need to give your wardrobe a bit of an update for summer 2013, but struggling to know what easy pieces to choose? Well, at Sassy Mama we’re huge believers in comfortable, practical, stylish dressing… And yes, those things can all go together! We’ve picked out some of our favourite trends that mamas can totally get on board with – and we tell you where to shop them too!
Printed Shorts
We all know mummy shorts are de rigeur for Hong Kong mamas running around town, but that doesn’t mean you need to live in denim cut-offs or khakis. Why not add a bit more pizzazz to your look by trying on some bright, printed shorts. Geometric patterns are totally in right now, and don’t worry about them making your booty look bigger – the most important thing is to choose a flattering style (generally a slightly longer cut) and then rock ‘em with tanned legs. Gap have some fun prints at the moment in a ton of sizes, and they’re a bit more forgiving than those at Zara which are super-duper-short. To be worn with a simple white tank or blousy shirt.
Peasant Blouses
Easy, breezy and chic, peasant blouses are so hot right now. Try to avoid the temptation to layer up under them, just pop on a nude bra and let some skin show through. We love those by Free People, but have to give a special shout-out to J Crew’s kids’ version for mama-and-me matching!
Delicate bracelets
The “arm party” look is kind of over – time to move on ladies. We’re no longer loading up on bangles and baubles until we jingle-jangle when we walk, but instead the look is low-key, charming and delicate. Choose a fine chain, a neon string or a teeny tassel and you’ve nailed the look. Check out brands like Shashi, Vivien Frank (above) or this beautiful wishbone bracelet from Daisy at The9thMuse.
Small-brimmed hat
If you’re still working that beaten up straw Stetson, you might want to consider an update to a Trilby or Fedora – yup, small is beautiful when it comes to brims this summer! Perfect for keeping the hot sun off your face without resorting to sporting a baseball cap (soooo not stylish mama). Check out labels like Eugenia Kim (above), Melissa Odabash if you want to invest, or head down to good ol’ H&M if you know you’re likely to sit on/lose/let the kids play with it!
Bold florals on… just about everything… especially trousers!
We’re not talking about Cath Kidston chintz, but bold statement-making florals are having a moment. To get a fashion-y look, seek out wide-legged pants and pair with a breezy top (tucked in for leg-lengthening effect). If you’re splashing out, Derek Lam (as shown in the image above) is your man, but if you’re saving, check out good ol’ ASOS.
So there you have it mamas – your summer wardrobe, totally sorted! We’ll see you looking stylish at the school gates soon!
