Best Chinese Restaurants in Hong Kong for the Whole Family

We are so lucky to live in Hong Kong and have access to so many different types of Chinese cuisine. From spicy Sichuan and Shanghainese delights, to Peking duck and Beijing specials, to local Cantonese favourites, there’s a huge array of delicious dishes to choose from when you’re craving Chinese! With so many options we couldn’t possibly list them all; instead we’ve chosen our personal favourite places to enjoy the food of our home. We can’t promise you won’t be hungry after reading this post…

Surmayee:

Lao Shang Hai at the Novotel Hotel in Wan Chai has got to be my family’s all time favourite Chinese restaurant. The food is incredible, the service is great and location is pretty unbeatable! We would definitely recommend trying out their Xiao Long Bao (nothing screams comfort like perfectly seasoned soup dumplings), Crispy Pork Noodles and the Tofu with Green Veggies. They also do a mean fried rice, in case your meal isn’t complete without your carbs!

Grab some friends, friends of friends (or even a couple strangers on the street…) and pop on a ferry to Cheung Chau for some authentic, fresh, delicious seafood. Head left off the pier and walk until you hit New Baccarat, the last restaurant on the strip. The friendly staff replenish the Lazy Susan with bottles of Tsing Tao whenever they see the glasses running low and one lucky diner gets the privilege of choosing the still splashing main course! You’ll leave ready to fall into a food coma, with your wallet having barely taken a hit!

(Pro tip: make sure to call ahead if you’re in the mood for lobster!)

If you don’t want to venture too far out of the Central area, Wang Fu Restaurant offers some of THE most tasty, affordable and accessible dumplings around. Located right in the middle of it all on Wellington Street, Wang Fu is a great place to hit after work (or as a good stomach-lining meal before a night out with your fellow mamas!). I particularly love their veggie dumplings in soup noodles, which leave me satisfied every time (and only $42 lighter) – fresh, filling, and damn good. There is almost always a line at lunch times and there can be at dinner time as well, so be prepared for a little wait – it’s worth it. After all, a line is just a sign that the food is divine!

Sometimes it’s a struggle for my family to find a place to eat – especially since we have a mixture of meat eaters and non-meat eaters. We tend to gravitate towards Mask of Si Chuen & Beijing, located in Tsim Sha Tsui. They are incredibly versatile towards their vegetarian clientele, offering a vast menu sans-meat, and even providing veggie meat versions of popular dishes (which makes it the only place Mum and I can eat happily!). I swear by the Chicken with Chilli Peppers (often driving by to get it to-go) and their dumplings! Make sure to try their Mango Tofu Cheesecake – I promise it’s not as intimidating as it sounds!

The go-to spot for my family for Chinese food is The Chinese Restaurant in Tsim Sha Tsui. Their set lunch is $278, which includes dim sum, noodles, fried rice and a whole bunch of other delicious dishes. The Chinese Restaurant is also vegetarian friendly, offering up tasty alternatives for any herbivores.

An oldie but a goodie, the American Restaurant has been working the wok since the end of World War Two! Contrary to it’s name, this gem is a hub of delicious Chinese cuisine, whipping up the best in Peking Duck, Sizzling Beef and Beggar’s Chicken (which is so popular, you’ll need to order in advance). Tasty and hard to beat, be sure to make a reservation as both floors of the restaurant are packed day in, day out.

American Peking Restaurant, 20 Lockhart Road, Wan Chai, Hong Kong

Don’t get me wrong, I’m always happy with a big steaming bowl of prawn wonton mein, or plates upon plates of char siu cheung fan at Yum Cha. But every now and then I crave Chinese cooking in a more contemporary setting. Enter Ho Lee Fook, a hip and happenin’ spot from Black Sheep Restaurants in SoHo. Chef Jowett serves up Chinese food with a fresh, modern twist, using quality ingredients to enhance the flavours we all know and love. I’m a huge fan of the “Mom’s ‘mostly cabbage, a little bit of pork’ dumplings with sacha soy dressing”, which elevates the simple dumpling. For something a bit bigger, I can’t recommend the “Roast wagyu short ribs with jalapeño puree, green shallot kimchi and a soy glaze” enough, which absolutely melts in the mouth. The atmosphere here is buzzing and the decor is funky (think mahjong tiles and lucky cats lining the walls) – this is a seriously cool restaurant to bring a big group of friends.

Whether you’re looking for the tiniest local dim sum spot or a top-tier michelin star sanctuary, Hong Kong prides itself in leaving no tastebud disappointed! So when asked to recommend just ONE place, I have to go with one that offers an experience… Long Men Lou: Chi Lin Vegetarian. Set beneath a cascading waterfall at Chi Lin Nunnery, a meal here feels entirely removed from the city. Despite it only serving healthy veggie options (I know, Chinese food seems incomplete without char sui bao), this is one I always suggest to visiting guests! Plus, it’s reasonably priced and all proceeds go right back into Chi Lin Nunnery.

My go to spot for Chinese food in Hong Kong is Pang’s Kitchen in Happy Valley. Not only is this place down the road from my apartment but the food is so good! It is a tiny little spot that you would probably walk right by if you didn’t know about it, but it’s actually a Michelin Starred Restaurant. Be prepared to wait though, especially around dinner time! This place gets packed which is a good sign in my book.

There are so many options for delicious Chinese food in Hong Kong, there’s no way we can list them all! Here are some more of our favourite places if you’re looking for a great Chinese meal:

– Mott 32: High-end, fabulous decor and oh-so stylish. Think Iberico Char Siu…

– Din Tai Fung: Quick, easy comfort from this famous Taiwanese chain. The xiao long baos are a must – hey, if they’re good enough for Tom Cruise…

– Crystal Jade: A fail-safe option offering comforting xiao long bao, Shanghainese dishes, dim sum and handmade noodles.

– Dim Sum: Too many choices, whether you go for a no frills local joint or a 5 star hotel, you can’t go wrong with a basket of ‘har gao’.

–  Tung Po: Family-style sharing and HK beer in Chinese bowls… this place is great for big groups and a whole lot of fun.

– Cha chaan teng: HK style Western food that includes French Toast with lashings of butter, macaroni with spam and milk tea… try Australian Dairy Company or Hokkaido Dairy Farm Milk Restaurant.

– Beijing style dumplings at the Queen’s Street Cooked Food Market are a quick, cheap option you won’t regret.

– Tsui Wah: Open all night, this is our favourite stop for late night Hong Kong eats.

– Tsim Chai Kee Noodle – the best prawn wontons in town…

– Feeling hot, hot, hot? Try Chilli Fagara, DAN DAN Soul Food or the newly opened Qi-Nine House of Sichuan for a spicy feast.

– All the restaurants on Lamma Island serve up delicious, fresh seafood. Salt & Pepper Squid, Garlic Prawns, Scallops… you name it, we love it.
