Tiny Bites: Sunday Brunch at Yamm, The Mira Hong Kong, Tsim Sha Tsui

We are constantly on the lookout for family-friendly foodie destinations to add to the Sassy Mama roll call, so when we were recently invited to try out The Mira’s Sunday brunch at Yamm, I didn’t hesitate in bundling my boy into his stroller and heading over to the Dark Side!

When the whole fam rocked up to brunch on the dot 11:30am (everything is timed around naps these days!), we were impressed to see that things were already in full swing, with many of the tables full and chefs bustling over their various stations.

And there are a lot of stations to choose from, with all the usual brunch faves and more besides, meaning that even the fussiest eaters are well catered for. My son had a ball selecting from the fresh juice options and (non-alcoholic!) fruit punch, while parents and grandparents tucked into the free-flow bubbly.

Thumbs up: Top marks for the friendly and super-attentive service, which was particularly impressive as the restaurant filled up and the kids all got rowdier! Colouring pens and paper were offered as soon as we sat down, keeping hungry meltdowns at bay, and unbreakable kids crockery was provided without us having to ask for it.

The sheer choice of scrummy options makes this a great choice for a large group and seafood lovers will zone in on the fresh oysters, shrimp and crayfish on offer. And it was sugar junkie me – rather than my uncharacteristically well-behaved toddler – having to be dragged kicking and screaming from the vast array of desserts. The teppanyaki ice-cream station is a must for any sweet tooth, and any buffet that includes such top-notch macarons will always win my heart.

The entertainment was an added bonus – Lawrence the magician mingled with the tables bamboozling everyone with card tricks. He developed a little retinue of fans that followed him around the restaurant like the Pied Piper throughout the afternoon, so it’s clear that kids love this diversion. Actually, who am I kidding? The adults in our group were still talking about exactly how he managed a particular sleight of hand many hours later.

Thumbs down: While the selection and quality was generally great, we did feel that a few of the dishes didn’t hold their own. The tempura was limp and oily (a natural consequence of sitting under hot buffet lamps) and accompaniments to the (delicious) carvery meat were limited – a few more vegetable side dishes would elevate this from pretty good to really great.

The free-flow bubbly is a top notch ‘Blanc de Blancs’ sparkling wine rather than champers, and the pricing reflects this. My French-resident parents gave it their seal of approval (more than good enough for me!) but some brunch purists may prefer a branded champagne, in which case Whisk upstairs at the Mira may be worth a look.

High chairs: Plenty, in fact there are two varieties suitable for either babies or toddlers.

Stroller access: Yep, roll in at street level and park up. Our boy napped in his without getting in anyone’s way in the spacious restaurant, or staff are happy to stash behind the reception desk.

How much: $398 for adults, $238 for kids 3-11 (under 3’s are free), making this a well-priced brunch in a great location.
