What Is The Gay Games?
Founded in San Francisco in 1982 by Dr Tom Waddell, an openly gay man and athlete who participated in the 1968 Olympics, the Gay Games is the world’s largest inclusive event that is open to everyone. It celebrates its theme of “Unity In Diversity” by bringing people from all walks of life together and educating them through a series of sports, arts and cultural events to liberate the LGBTQ+ community around the world. Regardless of your ethnicity, religion, age (minimum age is 18 for participating in sporting events), sexual orientation or gender identity – the Gay Games are open to all!
Though Asia, the world’s largest continent is home to a massive LGBTQ+ community (an estimated 221 million!), this will mark the very first time the Gay Games are held here. And there’s so much to look forward to! There will be sporting events, a festival village, exciting arts and cultural activities with daily performances, a gala concert and LGBTQ+ art exhibitions.
