Hong Kong Academy has just added a brand-new programme to its early childhood classes, capturing the attention of parents all over. The Maker’s Atelier is an optional after-school enrichment activity promoting hands-on practical inquiry where kids can get messy, satiate their curiosity and nurture a love of discovery.
Hong Kong Academy (HKA), based in an award-winning campus in Sai Kung, is an independent non-profit IB World School. In addition to offering the International Baccalaureate Primary Years, Middle Years and Diploma Programmes, it also has playgroup, pre-k and kindergarten classes. One of HKA’s standout qualities is its use of both modern learning spaces and gorgeous outdoor areas, giving students a healthy balance of comfort, exploration and experiential learning. That ethos is now reflected in The Maker’s Atelier, an optional bespoke Reggio-inspired programme that combines HKA’s early childhood expertise, a proven student-led educational approach and world-class facilities.

What Is The Maker’s Atelier?
Kids are naturally inquisitive and – let’s face it – love getting their hands dirty. The Maker’s Atelier encourages that innate curiosity by creating a space for them with real-life materials where they can build spatial reasoning, motor skills and develop ecological understanding.
Children will participate in a series of six hands-on sensory inquiry modules in afternoon sessions over the course of a year, guided by HKA’s expert faculty. Each module is an in-depth exploration rooted in tactile arts and environmental observation.

What Are The Sensory Projects In The Maker’s Atelier?
Primitive Pottery & Earth Glazes
Connecting creators to geology through manually building architecture. Working dense clay builds hand strength while revealing the molecular shift from pliable mud to permanent stone.
Regeneration & Gardening
While investigating subterranean soil life and seed planting, children work on fine motor precision. They’ll track seasonal growth cycles, develop patience and learn environmental taxonomy.
Culinary Arts & Food Science
A kitchen lab that explores thermal energy and kitchen chemistry. Little ones practice manual dexterity by measuring and chopping, while observing the transitions between food phases and biological leavening.

Outdoor Education & Nature-Based Inquiry
Build gross motor resilience and dynamic risk agility by navigating uneven forest terrain. Learners will track natural patterns and ecology, cultivating environmental empathy and independence.
Fibre Arts, Textiles & Heritage Weaving
A tactile art that enhances fine motor precision and mathematical sequencing. By manipulating tension grids and natural dyes, kids will transform raw wool into calming, structural textiles.
Woodwork & Tinkering
By merging practical physics with material literacy, children build bilateral coordination using real tools. They’ll explore friction, torque and balance, turning raw timber into stable structures.
