Spa Treatment: A Unique Massage Set to Hong Kong Nature Sounds

A journey of the senses

In the hustle and bustle of parenting, working and juggling a million other things, life can often get overwhelming. As a mum, I have come to learn that dedicated time set aside for myself (even if it’s just 10 minutes!) can do wonders to my general wellness. One of my favourite indulgences to spend on myself is time away at the spa. I must admit, they come few and far in between, but when I get an opportunity for pampering, I jump at the chance.

Recently, I had the chance to check out a new and truly unique treatment at The Plateau Spa at Grand Hyatt Hong Kong. The spa has partnered with the high end wireless speaker, Devialet to offer a luxurious spa treatment incorporating sound therapy unique to the city. The French innovator, in breakthrough sound technology, Devialet, produced the soundtrack by going around our city and recording the natural sounds of our home. The treatment is aptly named Voyage des Sens as it’s truly a journey of the senses!

To be honest, I was skeptical and equally curious to see how the sounds of the 852 would lead me to a meditative and peaceful state. I mean, who else also associates Hong Kong with the sounds of honking transportation, chatter of crowds and the banter of wet market vendor sellers? Thankfully, I’m glad I was proven wrong, as I soon found out that Devialet was inspired by the hidden sanctuaries of Hong Kong. The audio journey takes you through the city whilst intentionally looking for peaceful environments amongst the city scape.

There was something therapeutic as I walked into the treatment room to hear the low chatter of a Chinese tearoom playing in the background with hot ginger tea waiting for me. The therapist introduced what was to follow and then started the treatment.

The sounds of the tea room soon changed and led me on this beautiful audio journey towards the calming sounds of the ocean and then the windy mountain tops and chimes of old temples. My mind was able to wander along with the sounds and I was able to visualise myself leaving the busy city into Hong Kong’s nature-scapes without me having to leave the room. Each transition to a new location accompanied with the pressure points from the massage was truly something special. I felt as though my breathing became in sync with the soundtrack and I truly felt transported into a deeper meditative state. The rhythms and frequencies accompanied by the massage allowed my body, my senses and my mind to unwind and completely relax.

An hour later, the sounds of the Chinese tea house came back and my therapist woke me up from my nap to a fresh pot of hot tea and a refreshing mango pudding, a nod to Hong Kong’s classic dessert. I felt recharged, rested and ready to tackle the rest of my day.
