The perfect grab ‘n’ go breakfast!

About four years ago, I begged my husband to buy a Vitamix. I was convinced this was the golden light towards our family pursuing a healthier path as a whole. Almost four years on, and we use it numerous times a day! Smoothies are one of our favourite things to make, and the kids love to join in on the process, as well. They are great for a nutritiously jam packed meal on the go. And when I’m feeling a little lazy, it’s a great way to have convenient breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Our freezer and refrigerator are stocked with endless amount of fruits and veggies to help build the perfect smoothies. We make our own nut and seed milks when possible, though we make sure that we also buy from sources that aren’t filled with too many chemicals and are as clean as possible.

What else? Well I throw in as much nutrients as possible, something like ‘ ‘Raw Reserve’ is loaded in probiotics, and is a blend of spirulina, chlorella, sea vegetables such as kelp as well as sea lettuce and a bunch of greens such as kale. As I like to keep our bodies in an alkaline state as much as possible, this goes a long way! This isn’t the only product of it’s kind, but it’s the one we love that doesn’t compromise on taste. The kids lap it up, plus it’s a green powder and the kiddos love putting that ‘colouring’ into their smoothie.

Next up is ‘Great Lakes Gelatin’, this is great for metabolism, and due to its low molecular weight is easily absorbed and digested which helps the body in various areas such as bones, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, skin, hair and nails. As well as a good source of amino acids for regulating cell function there are endless reasons why gelatin is a good addition to daily diets.

Plant based vegan protein powders are a staple, especially vanilla flavoured, as it gives a sense of having a milk shake without all the baddies, easily playing tricks with our mind that we are being naughty without really doing so. We love VEGA Vanilla Flavour. It’s loaded with alfalfa, spinach, broccoli, kale, papaya, hempseed, sacha inchi, pea proteins and more! Again giving that extra bit of nutrition that we love minus any chemicals.

Even though we have some probiotics in supplements, there is nothing like having your own home made fresh probiotics. The amount of probiotics in a pill is nowhere near to what you can have in freshly made at-home options. Also noting that whilst pill formats do have value, they do not re-colonise your inner ecosystem as effectively in order to have a healthier gut. Fermented foodstuff drinks we make offer a better option. We make kefir, as it is so simple and easy to do so. We make both Milk Kefir and Water Kefir which at times gets thrown into our smoothies, ensuring we all get a good dose of healthy microbial action. There are many reasons why fermented foods and drinks are good for you, some of the basic reasons though would be helping with digestion, as well as boosting immunity!

So now you understand the basics of what goes into our family smoothies, here’s how we build one of the favorites at home.

Purple Monster Smoothie

  • 1 Cup Goat Whole Milk Kefir
  • 2 tsps Raw Reserve
  • 1 Scoop Vega Vanilla Powder
  • 2 Tbsp Gelatin
  • 1 large Banana
  • ½ Cup Frozen Mixed Organic Berries
  • ¼ Cup Filtered Ice Cubes

Give it a good blast ensuring everything is blended thoroughly… Then enjoy!

This is also makes great popsicles – dip it in melted raw dark chocolate’ and sprinkle with activated nuts for an extra special treat! Yum!
