Sassy Mama Celebrates Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2015

If you’ve noticed Hong Kong is looking a bit pinker than usual, it’s because October is International Breast Cancer Awareness month. Breast cancer is the most prominent cancer by a large margin among Hong Kong women, and there are over 3,500 new diagnoses each year. Luckily, there are a lot of different ways you can show your support this month. Here are the events that have us tickled pink:

Pink Walk for Breast Health

Get in tit-top shape at the Hong Kong Breast Cancer Foundation’s annual fundraiser, Pink Walk. As always, the Pink Walk will be held at Victoria Peak and participants must raise at least $300. Registration has closed but you can still head over to show your support!

If you can’t make the Walk, HKBCF started another fundraising initiative this year, called “Off Peak Pink Walk”. All you need to do is walk 3.5km (the distance of the Peak) anywhere — on the treadmill, to/from work, whatever — and send HKBCF proof from your smartphone apps or other devices on any day in October. You’ll also need to raise $300.

Shop for Pink

If you’d rather buy new shoes than walk in them, there are many ‘shop-for-a-cause’ opportunities this month. The Hong Kong Cancer Fund has partnered up with various stores around the city to promote breast cancer awareness as part of their Pink Revolution campaign. Keep an eye out for stores promoting anything pink – chances are their proceeds are going directly back to HKCF. You can see a list here.

HKCF also partnered directly with Citywalk this year. Anyone who donates $100 at Customer Service in Phase 1, Level 1 will receive a free pink shopping bag. There will also be an an educational booth at Phase 1, Level 1 from 9 – 12 October to learn more about breast cancer and how to best examine yourself. Everyone should check this (and then yourself!) out.

We can’t forget about Sheer, one of our favourite lingerie boutiques! Their “Think Pink” promotion will get you 15% off select pink bras.

Pink Classic Afternoon Tea at the Peninsula Tea

Who doesn’t love high tea at The Peninsula? This month enjoy tea in the pink, with special pink cocktails, mocktails and other treats! You can then work off those extra macaroons with a special “Pretty in Pink” spa package at The Peninsula Spa. Make a reservation here.

Dress Pink Day

Friday, 23 October is Dress Pink Day. As you can already assume, all you have to do is wear pink to show your support. This is not to say you can’t be sporting pink all month or even all year! But, today you have full reign to go all out. I mean pink spandex, pink tutu, pink dangly earrings?! Or, you know, just a pink shirt.

Think Pink Charity Art Exhibition

Over 30 international and local artists are taking part in Think Pink’s month-long exhibition at the Clipper Lounge. Most of the art is, as you could have guessed, pink! We’d all love an excuse to visit the Mandarin, so this exhibition is definitely worth it. If you’re still thinking about a piece by the end of the month, they will be auctioned off at The Space in Sheung Wan on the Thursday, 29 October.

Munchies Present: Halloween Fxck Cancer Block Party

This is a special shout-out to Munchies and Movember for planning the Shin Hing Street block party, which aims to raise awareness for both breast cancer and prostate cancer (November is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month). Our friends at Munchies will be joined by The Mixing Bowl, Cocotte, Neo, La Cabane, Figaro and Crafty Cow for an afternoon of live music, free face painting, free “Mo’ Shaving”, a doughnut eating competition (Man vs. Munchies), and, of course, lots of delicious food!

When: Saturday, 31 October, 3-7pm

How much: All food and beverages will be $50 per serving.

Eat and Drink Pink with Perrier-Jouët

One of our favourite bubblies, Perrier-Jouët, sponsors four Hong Kong restaurants: Gaia, Isola, Joia & maison es. This month, each restaurant has a pink dessert and drink special that honestly sound way too good to pass up!

Here’s a sneak preview of what Gaia and Joia are offering: Perrier-Joust Balson Rose paired with Pink Sabayon, Fresh Berries and Tulip Cookies, “a delicate and airy dessert made by infusing champagne in eggs and sugar as well as red berries, mint leaves and pieces of meringue”. Okay, our mouths are already watering! And trust us, the others sound just as good.

Proceeds will go to Hong Kong Hereditary Breast Cancer Family Registry, so you have no excuse not to indulge your sweet tooth!

Drink Pink For a Cause

Try out the tasty, new pink-edition smoothie at all nood food cafes and juice bars available through the month of October. For every special pink smoothie purchased, nood will donate HK$20 to support Hong Kong Breast Cancer Foundation.
