With so many amazing eateries in Hong Kong and new places popping up all the time, it’s all too easy to eat out or grab a takeaway from somewhere different every night. But sometimes the guilt of getting a takeaway and coming away laden with plastic and unnecessary packaging- much of which still cannot be recycled – gets a little much. Not to mention when you start thinking about how the food you are eating is actually produced.
Thankfully, there are a few businesses who are starting to do something about this and help us change the way in which we consume (as well as helping us to eat a little healthier along the way!). So we’ve rounded up a few of our fave places, which are doing their bit and making a difference…
Serving up organically inspired, locally produced, vegan and raw food, MANA! lead the way in helping us to consume with sustainability in mind. With their motto “Food that doesn’t cost the Earth”, they aim to promote a lifestyle which inspires change and doesn’t cost the earth (literally and metaphorically!).
Using their paper-only eco-packaging and operating with a zero-food waste policy, MANA! has introduced a new way to eat healthy, wholesome and organic fast food on the go. Make sure to try out their signature flatbreads and enjoy a truly guilt free meal!
By sourcing unprocessed local, sustainable and organic ingredients as often as possible, Grassroots Pantry aim to serve up delicious food, and emphasise the importance of a simple, sustainable lifestyle through healthy eating; helping to remind us that good food doesn’t have to be bad for you (or the environment!).
Offering up all day dining in their Sheung Wan location, as well as workshops, cooking classes, private dining and catering services, GRP is an awesome place to know – especially when brunch rolls around and you have a hankering for something a little lighter (I’m looking at you, poached eggs, avo and cashew hollandaise!)
Serving up delicious, fresh and high quality sushi, Wasabi Warriors want to help us in the 852 to “Eat Good, Do Good, Feel Good”. Where possible, they source free range, sustainable, recyclable and biodegradable products and support local farmers to help sustain and support the local food industry.
As all of the items on the menu are made fresh daily in store, anything that is not sold at the end of the day will go directly to charity or to compost as fertilizer, meaning that they generate almost zero food waste – something of a rarity in Honkers!
With the belief that a vegetarian and healthy lifestyle is good for the mind, body and environment, Maya Café is a top pick for the eco-conscious out there. Inspired by the Mediterranean Diet, the menu changes on a seasonal basis, featuring fresh ingredients, which are 100% organic and veggie, but which can also cater to vegan and gluten-free diets.
Get transported to The Med, with dishes like Cauliflower Rice Paella, or Zoodles with Cashew Alfredo Sauce and a range of delicious raw desserts!
