Tiny Bites: Assaggio Trattoria Italiana’s new Sunday brunch is a feast for lobster lovers!

Lobster lovers, you’re in for a treat – Assaggio Trattoria Italiana in Wan Chai is now serving up a lobster-themed brunch every Sunday from 12-3pm for just $398 a person (yes you heard that right, just $398!). For unlimited lobster, this is pretty much a steal – of course, I had to pop by recently to “test” it out for our readers (all in the name of research, right?).

Part of the Miramar Group, Assaggio Trattoria Italiana has two branches, one in TST in the Mira Mall and one in Wan Chai. For Sunday brunch, I would definitely recommend heading to the Wan Chai branch, with its spacious, open dining room and views across the harbour.

Italian is always a failsafe kid-friendly option, and even if the littlies aren’t fans of lobster, there’s plenty to be had here to satisfy tummies big and small. The lobster brunch is composed of two parts: an a la carte menu where you choose one entree from a list of lobster specialties, and the buffet spread, which is where you can really get your money’s worth if you’re a lobster fanatic! For a buffet, I really wasn’t expecting premium grade A lobster here, but I was surprised by how fresh and generous the portions are when it came to the mains.

Adults can savour dishes such as Lobster Salad, Lobster Bisque, grilled and fresh lobster (all washed down with a glass of Prosecco or two), while the kiddos dig into piles of ham and cheese, fresh focaccia and crackers, and a tasty potato salad (which my dining companion proclaimed her favourite through a mouthful of potato). They also have a wonderful assortment of steamed mussels and clams, tuna salad, marinated white fish, a variety of cheeses, fresh fruit, and their signature suckling pig.

It was a good thing our mains came in a timely fashion, or my fellow restaurant patrons would have been in serious danger of having no lobster to eat after my 3rd or 4th trip up to the lobster buffet (what can I say, I love lobster!)…

For main dishes, you can choose from Herb Butter-glazed Lobster, Lobster Salad “Catalana”, Lobster Aglio e Olio, Prosecco Risotto with Lobster and Lobster Lasagna… drooling yet?

We chose to share the Risotto and the Lobster Lasagna. The Prosecco Risotto was refreshing and surprisingly light for a risotto, with little chunks of lobster to go with the creamy wine-infused rice.

The Lobster Lasagna was also delish, although by this time we only had stomach space to bite off a small corner (don’t worry, I boxed up the rest). If you’re bringing kiddos along, I would definitely recommend ordering this cheesy crowd-pleaser.

All customers also get one order of Lobster Pizza to share amongst the table. For me, this was the most disappointing dish as it was lacking in flavour, though again, it might be a hit with the kids if they’re pizza-lovers!

To wrap up our lovely lobster feast, we couldn’t miss sampling the desserts, which were almost too pretty to eat. My companion knocked back two tiramisu shooters, which she said were divine, while I went straight for the creamy vanilla bean and chocolate ice cream.

Despite two hours of eating our way through lobster this and lobster that, we left the restaurant feeling satisfied yet not stuffed, which is the great thing about this brunch buffet – you can put away several portions, and not slip into a permanent food coma for the rest of the day! With so much fresh seafood and salads, this is definitely a great guilt-free option for the health-conscious – just steer clear of the lasagna and cheesy bread.
