Choosing the right kindergarten isn’t just about academics — it’s about finding a place where your child feels confident, curious and completely at home. At Harrow Little Lions Kindergarten, that philosophy is brought to life through a thoughtful blend of British early years education and a nurturing, child-first approach designed to shape both character and capability from the very start.

Under the guidance of School Supervisor Nikki Street, this international kindergarten is redefining what early education can look like — from purpose-built learning spaces to a bespoke curriculum that prioritises holistic development, leadership and a genuine love of learning. Add in a priority pathway to Year 1 at Harrow International School Hong Kong, and it’s clear why so many families are taking notice.

To find out more, we sat down with Nikki Street to explore the thinking behind Harrow’s bespoke curriculum, how a strong emotional foundation fuels academic success and what makes these early years such a powerful launchpad for the journey ahead.

Harrow has an incredibly strong legacy — in what ways does Harrow Little Lions Kindergarten equip students for their future academic endeavours?

Harrow Little Lions Kindergarten prepares children for future academic success by embedding the four Harrow Values — Courage, Honour, Humility and Fellowship — into everyday life. These values are consistently modelled by all adults in the community, allowing children to absorb them naturally through daily experiences and interactions.

Courage encourages independence, building confidence and a willingness to step outside one’s comfort zone. Honour is developed through simple, responsible actions, fostering integrity and pride. Humility is nurtured through teamwork, where children learn to value effort and contribution over the outcome. Fellowship grows through everyday acts of kindness and collaboration, helping children build strong, positive relationships.

What do you believe matters most in a child’s first educational experience?

We believe that children need to feel safe, secure, valued and fulfilled. When these foundations are in place, a child will be confident to ask questions, motivated to try new things, feel comfortable enough to collaborate with others and persevere when things get tricky. These skills are essential for a child to succeed academically and pastorally.

What does a typical day look like at Harrow Little Lions Kindergarten?

A typical day at Harrow Little Lions reflects the school’s belief that young children learn best when given time, space and thoughtful guidance. (Children follow the Little Lions Curriculum, a bespoke early years framework developed for AISL Harrow Schools and aligned with the UK Early Years Foundation Stage)

Circle time, early phonics and extended periods of uninterrupted play allow children to become actively involved in their learning, balancing adult-guided activities with self-directed exploration to build self-esteem, independence and problem-solving skills. English immersion runs throughout the day, alongside weekly Mandarin sessions, with library time and outdoor learning supporting all-around development

The campus is described as purpose-built — what does this look like in practice?

We’re very lucky to have a brand-new campus; our facilities have been designed with 3-5-year-olds in mind to ensure pupils are cared for both physically and emotionally. Our campus, located in the Kowloon district, spans around 20,000sqft and is arranged across three floors. Features include child-height handrails, hygiene stations in each classroom, rounded corner detailing and a healthcare centre staffed by qualified nurses. Neutral colour palettes promote a sense of calm for our young learners, allowing them to add colour to the campus with their creations and photos.

Can you tell us more about the “free-flow” classrooms and how this supports early years development?

The free-flow learning environment at Harrow Little Lions Kindergarten is made possible by sliding partition doors between classrooms, which allow children to access and explore more than one learning space on a daily basis. This unique setup offers increased opportunities for personal development, supporting children to expand their social circle and navigate a wider range of social situations.

When children move between spaces, adults also have the chance to observe them in different contexts and across various activities, supporting a more holistic view of each child to better understand their unique strengths, interests and developmental needs.

In what ways does early years development differ from that of students at primary or secondary school?

Early years development is fundamentally different from learning at the primary or secondary level because it focuses as much on how children learn as on what they learn. Through our bespoke Little Lions curriculum, ten Learning Domains build essential academic foundations while five Learning Disciplines nurture creativity, motivation and emotional wellbeing. Our learning journey is about far more than simply acquiring knowledge — it’s about helping children become confident and curious, with the character and skills they need to succeed as they transition into primary school and beyond.

What role can parents play in helping to support their child through the Harrow Little Lions Kindergarten programme?

Parents are welcomed as an integral part of their child’s educational journey through a variety of meaningful opportunities, as we believe children thrive when all the adults around them know how to support them.

Families can take part in stay-and-play sessions, school events, trips and sharing sessions, while regular workshops offer insight into classroom learning and practical ways to support development at home. Newsletters keep parents updated on weekly activities, and ongoing observations and photos are shared via an online parent portal, Seesaw. More formal progress updates take place through conferences and written reports.
