Our pick of free events for kids (and adults too) this month!

The kids may be back at school but that still leaves the weekend to spend some quality time together. And thanks to these free events, you won’t have to splash the cash to do so. From Mid-Autumn delights to a handcraft market and a spot of mother-daughter touch rugby bonding, there’s plenty to keep kids of all ages happy. Plus there’s a special treat for those households where “Baby Shark” still reigns supreme!

Everyone Can Be a SUPER-Shark @ Harbour City

Inspired by the hit children’s song “Baby Shark”, Harbour City has joined hands with PINKFONG to build Hong Kong’s first “SUPER-Shark Playground”. The interactive installation will have kids riding on the backs of the Shark Family, sliding down seashell slides, and playing hide and seek with little crabs in and out of the coral reefs. There’ll also be a JOOX Karaoke Booth where your littles can “Doo Doo Doo” to their heart’s content. And don’t miss the live music performances on Sunday, 8 September and Sunday, 15 September at 3pm and 4:30pm!

Sassy Mama Hong Kong Events: Retykle Pop-Up

Shopping bags at the ready mamas! Retykle is hosting an exciting pop-up at its Wong Chuk Hang studio – and you’re invited! Alongside discounted luxury kids’ shopping and a selection of eco-crafts, guests can also look forward to a Halloween costume swap, model search photos and sign up, book swaps and more.

Discovery Bay Market

Handcrafts meets beach day at the Discovery Bay craft bazaar market. Showcasing local, independent vendors selling handmade or self-designed wares, you’ll find everything from jewellery, homeware, fine art and children’s accessories.

Free Events For Kids: Tai Hang Fire Dance

Tai Hang Fire Dragon Dance

Legend has it that in the 19th century, the villagers of Tai Hang warded off an evil plague by staging a fire dance for three days and three nights, thus sparking one of our favourite Mid-Autumn traditions – the Tai Hang Fire Dragon Dance. Watch in wonder as a 67-metre fire dragon made with 70,000 incense sticks dances through the streets of Tai Hang. Kids and adults alike will be left awestruck.

When: Thursday, 12 September and Friday, 13 September, around 8:15pm to 10:30pm; Saturday, 14 September, around 8:15pm to 10pm
Where: Tai Hang, Causeway Bay, Hong Kong (for the best vantage point, head to Wun Sha Street)

Free Events For Kids: Urban Mid-Autumn Lantern Carnival

Urban Mid-Autumn Lantern Carnival 2019

It’s not Mid-Autumn without lanterns! Head down to Causeway Bay to see Victoria Park transformed into a magical lantern wonderland under the warm glow of the full moon. In addition to a host of dazzling lantern displays there’ll also be palm readings, game stalls, lantern riddle quizzes and more!

When: Friday, 13 September, 8pm to 11pm

Mothers And Daughters Sports Day

Forget shopping, how about a spot of touch rugby for mother-daughter bonding with a difference? Led by professional coaches from Phoenix Touch, you’ll learn the basics of the sport before incorporating your newly-learned skills into a real game. This event is suitable for kids aged 5 to 16 years old and no prior experience is needed! Make sure to sign up here to reserve your spot.

Lance X Eco Marine Back to School Adventure Cleanup Tung Chung

Spearheaded by 10-year-old student and young climate activist Lance, in collaboration with Keilem, founder of Eco Marine, this coastal cleanup aims to tackle the Tung Chung Bay area in North Lantau. Although close to much development, the area still boasts great biodiversity and is home to many species of wildlife including horseshoe crabs, mudskippers and egrets. Bring along the kids to learn more about the indigenous wildlife whilst helping to protect the environment to boot! Please note all children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
