There’s nothing worse than disappointing the kids when exciting plans get cancelled by unpredictable weather, so it’s always a good idea to have a list of go-to play options to fall back on. Whether you’re in search of a backup plan or just looking for a place for your tots to release some pent up energy, here are our favourite indoor play areas on the Kowloon side. Our list includes some firm old favourites, and some new spots on the scene that we think are worth checking out.

Baumhaus

Toys? Check. Play sets? Check. Indoor tree house, specially ordered from Germany? Check! Baumhaus is a tried and tested go-to thanks to the friendly staff and relaxed atmosphere. Baumhaus is the perfect place to spend a day indoors with your tiny tots; whether they’d prefer to be whooshing down the slide or creating their next big architectural feat with the building blocks, there’s something here to keep every child entertained. In addition to a holistic approach to the design of its play area, it also offers “Kindermusik” playgroup classes for babies and toddlers, and “DramaLab” classes for those aged 4 to 6. With everything from fabric swings to role play sets, come watch your kiddos learn through play and mark their milestones at Baumhaus’ internationally recognised and fully immersive play centres.

Sassy Mama Tip: Classes are priced per term at Baumhaus, but if you’re keen to sign up for playgroup classes for your child but don’t want to commit just yet, they offer trial classes for $300 that includes same-day playroom access. Request a trial class here, and let your kiddo decide!

Origami Cafe

Created as a space for parents and children to spend some quality time together as a family, Origami Cafe is an innovative space designed to take play back to the basics. Using a variety of toys and play sets, it aims to immerse you and your kids in educational play and creative workshops. And to top it all off, it serves up delicious Asian-fusion cuisine so nobody goes hungry. Located at the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, the former site of Hong Kong’s International Airport, the terminal also features an expansive outdoor space to take a pleasant stroll through after your session at the café.

Sassy Mama Tip: Origami Cafe is still relatively new on the scene, so it can manage quite a bit of traffic. Be sure to call ahead to make a reservation for your place to avoid disappointment!

How Much: Sessions are for 2 hours, priced at $138 per child Monday to Friday, and $198 per child on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, babies under 12 months enter free when accompanied by an adult. Minimum spending $100 per adult.

Jungle King

Located in Kwun Tong, Jungle King is one of the many popular restaurant/indoor playground hybrids popping up around the city. Featuring an indoor playground featuring twisty slides, surrounded by an inviting ball pit and a play area with a giant Lego pegboard wall. Jungle King is definitely worth if you have younger kids and live in the area. It’s also a popular venue for birthday parties – one to add to your list if you’re on the hunt for a good space!

How Much: Tuesday to Friday: 9 years old or above: $60 (including adults), 1 to 8 years olds: $40. Saturday, Sunday and public holidays: 9 years old or above: $120, 1 to 8 years old: $40.

Mabaland

For kids who like to jump from one activity to another, Mabaland in Ngau Tau Kok is a great option. It features multiple play zones with different activities, ranging from an indoor jungle gym to a climbing wall to a special area for bubbles and there’s even another section to experience VR. Mabaland has everything a child’s imagination can conjure up and more. Purchase a day pass or book in for a party.

Sassy Mama Tip: Children over the 130cm height mark will be refused access to the trampoline and climbing wall, so if your kid is on the taller side, you may want to try somewhere else to avoid disappointment.

Playhouse

A convenient fusion of restaurant and indoor playground, Playhouse offers families a chance to spend a fun day together, no matter the weather. Featuring activities such as puzzles, jungle gyms and slides that dump your tots into a ball pit, Playhouse promises a great time and the perfect place for a play date. There are four locations across Hong Kong (two of them in Kowloon!) and each of them boast different activities, so if there’s something specific you’re looking for, check out their website before you go.

E3 Club

You’ll find the usual soft play suspects here; slides, trampolines, ball pits, plus partnerships with Playdough and Hasbro; this indoor jungle gym has everything. Regulated with strict rules regarding hygiene and safety, it boasts a wide range of toys and, plus a toy store and various arts and crafts workshops for kids. With two branches at Megabox and iSquare, E3 Club is one of the most convenient indoor play destinations.

Kidnetic

If your kid has ever taken any interest in gymnastics (or just really like swinging and bouncing around!), Kidnetic’s open gym sessions are for you. Spanning 7000 square feet, it is the largest private kid’s gym in Hong Kong and features every kind of equipment imaginable; trampolines and monkey bars, beams and baby rings, slides and sponge pits, and spider swings galore! Classes with trained instructors are also available for kids aged 1 and older, with different options including beginner’s dids gym sessions to competitive private coaching.

How Much: Open gym passes are priced at $200 per child, admits one adult, with a 20% discount on rainy days. Hurrah!

Superpark

If you’ve got a mini adrenaline junkie on your hands, Superpark is the place to go. Both indoors and family friendly, this exciting activity park is located in Olympian City and has something for kids of all ages. From the kids’ gym (100cm and below) to the trampoline platform and obstacle wall (for kids 120cm or above), kids of every age and height are sure to find something to keep them busy. With tube slides and obstacle courses and even pedal car tracks and bowling – brace yourselves to hear multiple pleas to stay for longer when you session is up! Superpark requires tickets to be booked online, so be sure to check availability online before you bundle the kids out the door!

Free Indoor Playrooms

If you’re in a pinch and need something close by and easy, there are plenty of free playrooms located around the city sponsored by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. These playrooms are mainly designed for children aged from 4 to 9 years old, who are smaller than 142cm. Perhaps not as modern as the suggestions above, but perfect for those occasions when you have time to burn between errands, these can be a real lifesaver. And they’re free!

Bonus

The Little Gym

Founded in Washington, USA, in 1976, The Little Gym started with a vision for a nurturing, non-competitive environment for children to grow socially, intellectually, and emotionally. Although largely class based, it offers day camps on location during the summer and other school holidays, providing you with the chance to keep your kids occupied (and learning!) while you get to – dare we say it – take a well deserved break.

Sassy Mama Tip: Need a night out? The Little Gym runs Parents’ Survival Nights, scheduled on select Friday and Saturday nights, where you can drop off your child for a few hours and you can indulge in a night out with friends or on a date with your significant other. And rest assured, your kids will have a great time while you’re away – we can (almost) guarantee they won’t miss you too much.
