Lola & Syd

Beep… that’s the sound of a glam new brand cropping up on my Instant Goddess radar! This week Goddesses, I give you Lola & Syd, a cool accessories label that has just launched a new online store. Founder Sally Dwyer is a lady after my own heart – a self confessed accessories junkie – and the whole brand ethos is Accessories Maketh the Outfit. I couldn’t agree more!

The collection is made up of edgy, eclectic pieces, handpicked from around the world. The aim here is to make shopping for those finishing touches easy, by coming up with one collection that caters to different tastes, rather than trawling through pages and pages of accessories to find what you want.

Lola & Syd is based in Australia, but already has quite the following here in Hong Kong. Owner Sally actually used to live in the ‘852, but recently decided to take the business online after receiving so many requests to source and send jewellery to her fans overseas.

Sally says: “We believe that any wardrobe can be instantly updated with a few on-trend pieces, and through our collections we aim to bring an exciting and inexpensive way to inject your look with a little bit of fabulous.”

Now we all want a little bit of fabulous, so get yours at Lola & Syd!

And what’s more Goddesses, the prices are good! Credit cards at the ready and shopping goggles on…

Prices below have been converted into HK$ for your ease of reference but are approximate. Prices on the Lola & Syd website are in AU$.

This week Andrea Clark, Creative Director of The Mandarin Salon at Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong gets all 1920’s on us with The Great Gatsby!

Set in 1922, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby is about society living life to the full, unaware of the financial disaster to come. Gatsby is known for throwing the most lavish parties in New York with guests dressed in amazing richly detailed fashion with immaculate hairstyling.

Already I have been invited to a prohibition-themed party this summer. How do I prepare, what shall I wear and how shall I style the hair? The little bob that was popular during this era is making a comeback today. So if you can wear this look – and not everyone can – then all you need to do is find a headpiece adorned with anything from crystals to feathers and usually in a headband style.

I am a brunette but I may opt for a wig in a different colour to my own. If not my hair is long enough to create a wave and have it pulled back at my neck, just behind one ear. This will suit the backless long dress that I have chosen, that is ruched at the hip by jewels. I will get one of our talented stylists to create my hairstyle so I’ll supply them with a few images of the look I want to create prior to my appointment to allow them time to spark their creative energy before the day.

Lips and eyes were dramatic in that era, with heavy eyeliner and lips usually deep red and perfectly outlined. It’s a chance to feel glamorous and embrace the chance to escape to another place and time.

At the end of your evening when you’ve dizzily danced in a room full of cigar smoke and your heels need to come off, my best tip to you if you don’t want to shampoo your hair is to blast it with a cold hairdryer. This will force the stale smell away from you and your pillow, allowing you to sleep and dream of your next party!

Yogi tea saying of the week: “To know others is smart. To know yourself is wise”.

Instant Goddess saying of the week: “A little party never killed anyone!”

Until next week Goddesses and remember you are ALWAYS, ALWAYS worth it!
