The best of both worlds for your little one’s pre-school.

Choosing a pre-school for your little one can be tough, but it doesn’t have to be! If you’re looking for a well-established curriculum combined with a brand new campus, check out the new Malvern College Pre-School Island West (MCPS). With a legacy stretching back to 1865, and a forward-thinking approach, this new location builds on the success of its sister school, Malvern College Hong Kong. The brand new pre-school offers a holistic and bilingual academic programme, based on the UK’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).

The Monday morning struggle is real (for us, let alone the kids!), so nourishing your child’s enthusiasm for learning is key. Luckily, Malvern’s EYFS is designed to nurture a child’s curiosity in seven areas (listed below), allowing them to form relationships in order to thrive socially and emotionally while having fun! A core principle of the EYFS is “Learning Through Play”.  MCPS takes great care in establishing guided play sessions, where staff use various teaching aids to create a specific environment, which become the “toys” through which children explore.

The structured and free play sessions focus on the core EYFS topics in a relaxed and inquisitive environment and storytelling is one of the key methods to make learning more accessible. After reading a book for example (let’s say it includes fruit), students are encouraged to follow up with games that stimulate EYFS learning, including:

Communication/language and literacy development:
Guiding children to re-tell the narrative with their own words and storyboards.

Mathematics:
Weigh different fruits then try to put them in order of weight.

Personal, social and emotional development:
Great for life-skills, students are always encouraged to think about others, e.g. “If you were getting fruit for a friend, what would you give them and why?”

Expressive arts and design:
Getting hands-on and drawing fruit whilst exploring colours and textures.

Science:
Learning about the fruit in the story. Where does it come from? What does it feel like?

Understanding the world:
Looking at the labels on fruit and discovering the country of origin before plotting them on a map.

Island West is conveniently located in the heart of Sai Ying Pun, but Malvern also has a world-leading Forest School programme situated in the heart of nature. An integral part of the student’s preschool journey, it’s one of the first in Hong Kong allowing children to learn about the world around them.
