Phoenix Sweets

Expect exquisite made-to-order creations for all types of celebrations from this high-end local cake shop. Make sure you book at least two weeks in advance to reserve your handcrafted cake, as there is limited availability. Many of the options allow you to choose the flavour of the buttercream cake (earl grey, vanilla, honey yuzu or chocolate). Just add $200 to the price tag if you want to slice into a vanilla rainbow cake! We like the focus on using natural ingredients for flavouring (think tea leaves, Valrhona Chocolate, 100% fruit puree and organic rose water), cutting down on unnecessary sugary sweetness. Don’t forget about its cupcakes, which are equally pretty and can be themed to suit the occasion (birthday, baby shower etc.).

Ms B’s Cakery

You’ll be in “love at first bite.” From handcrafted sugar decorations to premium European chocolate, Ms B’s Cakery takes you straight to cake heaven. These desserts aren’t for your average party; be prepared to be dazzled by the elite level of these beauties. Its speciality cakes are truly mesmerising and are works of art, but the real showstopper has to be the Madame Butterfly. You know it’s a Ms B’s when you see a fluttering butterfly gently balancing on the top of a cake (these cakes are often replicated but never executed as well as the original), and if that isn’t enough, ingredients such as pistachio, chocolate chiffon and apricot compote should tempt your taste buds!

Mandarin Cake Shop

If you’re looking for a sophisticated cake for mature palettes, then head to the Mandarin Cake Shop. It’s an adult’s tuck shop and its creations will surely impress the one you’re looking to spoil. Its opera cakes will surely be a hit with layers of delicate sponge and indulgent ganache. Looking for something less rich? Try the acclaimed classic Mandarin cheesecake or mango coconut mousse cake, tasty enough to impress any partygoer. You can download an order form online to pre-order your cakes (500g per cake and price varies).

Cova

These indulgent adult-enticing cakes may just put you in a chocolate coma. The trusted designs at Cova offer the finest ingredients from around the world, heavenly flavours and an elegant aesthetic. If layers of sponge cake filled with chocolate and cream, surrounded by a fort of chocolate-dipped profiteroles get your salivary glands excited than the signature St. Honoré is the Cova cake for you (the cheesecake is pretty darn good, too!).

Sift

One of Sassy Mama’s firm favourites (it’s a much-needed pit-stop after a busy morning!), we could not prepare a list of top cakes without including this household name. Create a cake stand of cupcakes in a variety of flavours, and save on the cake plates and cutlery (just an idea!). When the words S’mores & Oreos appear on the same menu you just know the birthday kid will be smiling from ear to ear. Its central kitchen churns out (on average) thousands of cupcakes a day, so its craft has definitely been perfected! The red velvet is our go-to.

The Cakery

Calling all health-conscious parents! The Cakery was conceived by passionate baker and mother of two Shirley Kwok. These gourmet guilt-free cupcakes are gluten-free, paleo or made with wholewheat flour, and are low in refined sugar. Think you’ll be sacrificing on flavour? Wrong! These (basically) taste the same as the sugar-stuffed ones! Who said you can’t have your cake and eat it too?

The Cakery, Shop 303, Landmark, 15 Queen’s Road Central, Central, Hong Kong, 6683 3833

The Cakery, Shop 124, Lee Garden Two, 28 Yun Ping Road, Causeway Bay, Hong Kong, 2816 1838[email protected]www.thecakery.com

Lady M

Known for its absolutely tantalising signature mille-crêpes cakes, Lady M has made its way from New York to HK. While the service can be hit or miss, the super-thin crêpes with a thin layer of fresh cream in between each one makes for a surprisingly light cake variation! Make sure to check out the Earl Grey mille-crêpe.

Little Miss Macarons

Add a splash of colour to the birthday table with macarons. This pastry chef sure knows how to add flavour to these “jewels” of confection, and a tower of flowing macarons will have any French patisserie-lover drooling. It will have your child’s imagination running wild. Birthday kid not a cake fan? These may be a great alternative. We’re especially loving its signature flavours, such as the sea salt caramel or the passionfruit almond cream. It also provides a limited offer list too if the signatures were not enough to tantalise your taste buds.

Little Miss Macarons, Unit 819, Block A, Hoi Luen Industrial Centre, 55 Hoi Yuen Rd, Kwun Tong, Kowloon, Hong Kong, WhatsApp: 9087 8812, [email protected]www.littlemissmacarons.com

Sweetpea Café

This is another one for health fans. This rustic gluten-free cake shop has quickly become a Soho staple. With its dairy-free and vegan options, signature flavours such as double Earl Grey and strawberry shortcake won’t disappoint. The ingredient-driven establishment is allergy-friendly and has something for everyone. If you’re keen for something other than a cake, batches of tarts and chiffon cupcakes are also available.

Sweetpea Café, G/F, 4 Shin Hing Street, Central, Hong Kong, 3689 7269, WhatsApp: 9261 1505,  www.sweetpea-cafe-hk.myshopify.com
