Alternative “Cake” Options

Next time you’re looking for a cake for a special occasion, why not check out Jouer. This French inspired patisserie certainly knows how to create good looking sweet treats. Their layered cakes are particularly easy on the eye and the palate, not to mention seriously photogenic. Our personal favourite is the S’mores chocolate cake (from $128), which has layers of cocoa and salted mascarpone cream, graham cracker crumbs and burnt mini marshmallows (salivating yet?)! They also stock a good range of cake toppers for every occasion (starting from just $55), to help add that special finishing touch. The brand prides itself on using premium ingredients and flavours, and promises to infuse some joie de vivre into every bake. For the vegans out there, don’t despair! There are plenty of options available for you too, including a Chrysanthemum Goji Berry cake with whipped honey coconut cream and honeycomb crunch topping. They also have a great range of savoury treats (mini beef wellington or rosemary mushroom tart, anyone?), which are perfect to serve as party canapés. Don’t forget to subscribe to the company’s e-newsletter to receive 10% off your first online purchase!

eat parties best cakes kids phoenix sweets
Phoenix Sweets
Phoenix Sweets has now taken up residence in Tai Kwun, after previously operating out of PMQ. Expect exquisite made-to-order creations for all types of celebrations from this high-end local cake shop. We love the rainbow mermaid butter cream cake (from $1,030). The recipient’s name and/or a short birthday message can be iced on for no additional cost. But make sure you book at least two weeks in advance online to reserve your handcrafted cake, as there is limited availability. Many of the options allow you to choose the flavour of the butter cream cake (earl grey, vanilla, honey yuzu or chocolate). Just add $200 to the price tag if you want to slice into a vanilla rainbow cake! We like the focus on using natural ingredients for flavouring (think tea leaves, Valrhona Chocolate, 100% fruit puree and organic rose water), cutting down on unnecessary sugary sweetness. Don’t forget about its cupcakes, which are equally pretty and can be themed to suit the occasion (birthday, baby shower etc.). The Princess set (12 pieces for $420) is sure to be a hit with little girls.

These desserts aren’t for your average party; be prepared to be dazzled by the elite level of these beauties. Its speciality cakes are truly mesmerising and are works of art, but the real showstopper has to be the Madame Butterfly. You know it’s a Ms B’s when you see a fluttering butterfly gently balancing on the top of a cake (these cakes are often replicated but never executed as well as the original), and if that isn’t enough, ingredients such as pistachio, chocolate chiffon and apricot compote should tempt your taste buds!

One of Sassy Mama’s firm favourites (it’s a much-needed pit-stop after a busy morning!), we could not prepare a list of top cakes without including this household name. Create a cake stand of cupcakes in a variety of flavours, and save on the cake plates and cutlery (just an idea!). When the words S’mores & Oreos appear on the same menu you just know the birthday kid will be smiling from ear to ear. Its central kitchen churns out (on average) thousands of cupcakes a day, so its craft has definitely been perfected! The red velvet is our go to.
