Although it sometimes feels like being pregnant and stylish is a bit of an oxymoron, I see from admiring others that it can indeed be done, even if I felt like I didn’t ever really achieve it myself! There are limited resources for maternity wear in Hong Kong so I would advise if you have a trip to the UK or US you should think about stocking up hugely on some key pieces that will keep you feeling trendy even when you’re the size of a house. My biggest mistake when pregnant was listening to the magazines that tell you that you shouldn’t spend too much on maternity wear as it’s such a waste of money, and that you can make your current wardrobe work for you, or just buy pieces in larger sizes than normal. That’s complete bollocks in my opinion, as you’ll know if you’ve ever worn the same boring clothes day in day out for months and months! You should spend out a bit at the beginning of your pregnancy on things that will grow with you – there’s a reason why so many maternity clothes are in stretch jersey, and buy at least five dresses that are specifically maternity. After all, it’s not just your belly that will grow, and maternity clothes are designed to accommodate growing boobs and bums too!
My top five recommendations for Pregnancy shopping in Hong Kong are:
5/F Tung Yiu Commercial Building, 31A Wyndham Street, Central, Hong Kong
This adorable boutique is the pregnant fashionista’s dream, but beware, you will need deep pockets if you plan to dress yourself entirely from here. With a collection including labels like F.E.M by t-bags, James jeans and LA Made, you’ll find brands that aren’t available elsewhere in Hong Kong. Perfect to treat yourself or for a special occasion item. I’d recommend splashing out on one pair of designer maternity jeans as you’ll wear them post-partum (for longer than you’d expect!) too, and they’ll make you feel good.
201-202, 2/F, Lee Gardens Two, Causeway Bay, Hong Kong
Who knew this UK staple did maternity clothes too? Not me until after I gave birth unfortunately! Their Lee Gardens store has the largest collection including some cute frocks and some great nursing tops. Don’t expect the styles to rock your world – these are quality basics in block colours that you’ll wear again and again.
Online and at Bumps to Babes, 5/F Pedder Building, 12 Pedder Street, Central, Hong Kong
Sono Vaso is a maternity line specializing in stretch jersey pieces where the fabric is thick enough to be skimming and forgiving of those preggers lumps and bumps. Their dresses never really fitted me for some reason, but they’ll definitely be good for those girls who are a little larger up top. Free delivery within 1-3 days within Hong Kong.
7/F, 118 Queen’s Road Central, Central, Hong Kong
Linea Negra is located above Diesel on Queen’s Road Central, and despite the slightly grim name have some great pieces. This is the place to head if you’re looking for maternity workwear in particular, and one of the only places you can buy maternity skirts. They are also the Hong Kong stockists of the Belly Bandit, made famous by Kourtney Kardashian.
Online and Room 105, 1st floor Hollywood Centre, 77 – 91 Queens Road West, Sheung Wan, Hong Kong
For Maternity and Nursing bras, you’ll need to make a trip to Bralicious. I pretty much wore my regular bras throughout pregnancy as I a) didn’t know you’re not supposed to wear underwired bras when you’re pregnant and b) my bra size didn’t change too dramatically, but most of my friends swear they couldn’t have done without Bralicious.
Also I have to throw out an honorable mention to Sabina Swims who do FAB maternity swimwear that is super-stylish (see image at the top). I bought a tankini for my babymoon in Phuket and felt so great in it. I’ve yet to try it on since I’ve given birth, but I have a feeling it will be coming with me on my next vacation!
