Pregnancy is certainly a joy, but let’s face it there are a lot of less-than-desirable side effects that come with it! The extra weight I’m carrying combined with the extra heat makes me want to be whisked away somewhere wonderful and wrapped in a cocoon of comfort. Well, the people at Spa L’Occitane have come up with just that, right here in Hong Kong!
From the moment you step into the quiet retreat of the flagship spa on Star Street (check our Rach’s review here), the pampering begins. I ascended the spiral staircase (be careful as some of the steps are a bit narrow and if you’re as clutzy as me, you’ll want to grab onto the handrail!) and was immediately given a pair of cushy slippers to slide my tired tootsies into while I filled out all the usual forms then headed to my treatment room. My conscientious massage therapist asked me if I needed to use the ladies room before the treatment began… perhaps they ask everyone, but as a pregnant woman this touch was appreciated!
The treatment began with a relaxing footbath using lightly scented rose bath salt. My feet felt divine as the therapist gently applied pressure while bathing away. I noticed that afterwards she washed her hands, a step I feel many spas shockingly miss.
The specially designed bed has a cutout for an expectant mother’s beautiful belly, and I felt light as air lying on my front, quickly forgetting my extra inches! All oils used in the pregnancy treatment are safe, gentle to sensitive skin and lightly fragranced – very important for hyper-sensitive noses. Breathing in the relaxing aroma of the almond massage oil put me in the right frame of mind to relax and stop thinking about all the things I need to do to prepare for my baby’s arrival.
The therapist was superb – using calming and soothing strokes, she placed just the right amount of pressure on my problem areas. A combination of vertical Swedish strokes and circular Balinese strokes worked wonders to release my knots and loosen my tight back and leg muscles. The only caution I have for the other mamas-to-be is to be very careful the time comes to flip over from front to back. While the centre cutout makes it easy to forget you’re a bit bigger, sitting up again quickly reminds you, and navigating a hole makes for a bit of an awkward transition! However, my therapist’s expert knowledge of pregnant women’s needs more than made up for this momentary awkwardness. She knew just the right spots to massage without being told, including a gentle rub of the hips and a tender circular massage on the belly that put my bouncing little guy at ease.
After 90 minutes of this fabulous treatment my brain screamed “More!” but like all good things, this one came to a soothing end. My therapist gave me time to change and met me outside the room to show me to the makeup area where there was a cup of warm lemon water and a biscuit waiting for me. She pointed out the L’Occitane makeup for an after-treatment touch-up, which I appreciated as my makeup does tend to rub off during a massage. Face refreshed, I was met at the reception counter and – just like Rach’s experience – was not pushed to buy any goods or extra services.
In my opinion, this massage has everything an expectant woman could dream of and more. And right now, they’re offering pregnant Sassy Mamas a very special offer!
