HK’s First STEMinn Program

Times are changing faster than ever, mamas. New trends are constantly evolving in the technological, sociological and cultural spheres. Not only does it sometimes feel impossible to keep up with it all, it’s a whole other challenge to equip our kids for the unknown that lies ahead in their futures. Schooling seems a sensible place to start, but there is such a wide variety in ethos and curriculums, that it can be just as overwhelming and frustrating for mamas to find the perfect fit.

It’s an exciting, but intimidating, prediction that most of the jobs our children will have do not exist today. How do we best prepare them to be self-motivating, savvy and technologically innovative individuals? Stamford American School is launching the first problem-based STEMinn (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math and Innovation) Program in Hong Kong. While the STEM curriculum has been gaining popularity in recent years, Stamford is introducing an “Innovation” component to help children develop their scientific abilities, entrepreneurial initiative, leadership skills and practical prowess.

With the growing need for scientists and engineers in the workforce* and the focus on encouraging females into these professional fields, Stamford’s curriculum is based on the Next Generation Science Standards and enhanced by AERO and Common Core Plus standards (#girlpower). STEMinn is driven by skills and components, as well as content, whereby students are encouraged to actively participate in the conception, design and production of their own ideas – such as app coding or robotic production. We can definitely get on board with that, mamas! Stamford also provides access to dedicated levelled STEMinn libraries and “Makerspaces” to allow children to explore, test and create from an early age.

Starting from 5 years old, students at Stamford are prepared for the highly challenging areas of Physics, Biology and Chemistry offered in Secondary School. The Program also enables children to develop their critical thinking and apply this to real life situations; an important life skill that they can take from school, to home, to work and beyond. Sounds like a recipe for a future leader to us!
