The hip little corner of Sheung Wan around Tai Ping Shan Street is well worth a visit with the kiddos to get a feel for a neighbourhood in flux… We’ve raved about all the best little finds before, and also introduced you to Tallensia where you can floral jam at the weekends, but this time we’re letting you in on a brand new little secret called Teakha, or t-e-a-k-h-a if we spell it out like they do!
Owned by Hong Kong mama Nana, this teeny little shop opened just a couple of weeks ago, and has already been causing a lot of buzz, partly due to its proximity to HK Mag’s offices. Homely and cosy, there are only two tables inside – a large “family-style” dining table, and a little cafe table, where I perched when I went along to check it out with my 15-month old daughter. While Teakha serve coffee once a week, the main reason to visit is their selection of unusual teas (my request for an Earl Grey was politely deflected) from India and Sri Lanka in particular. Choose from milk teas or specialty teas and step outside of your usual habits to try something new! I picked Roselle, imagining it would be somewhat like Rosehip, but upon asking Nana, I learned it’s actually made from Hibiscus flowers. Fragrant, sweet and served in a charming earthenware Japanese teapot, it was the perfect treat for a cold, wintry afternoon.
To go along with my tea, I picked out a fig scone which I shared with my daughter. It was buttery, crumbly, not-too-sweet and filled with the subtle crunch of thousands of teeny fig seeds – yum! I was a bit embarrassed that my toddler managed to spread it around quite a lot on the floor, but thankfully Nana didn’t bat an eyelid. I only wished I’d sampled more of the delicious-looking baked goods, including “Auntie’s Tangerine Cake”, and a traditional Chinese cake made from Water Chestnuts which Nana’s mum makes.
There are some goodies for sale at the side of the store, including some kids toys and clothing, as well as some home blends of Teakha’s teas.
