The trend for denim is HUGE this coming season, with all different styles and washes getting a look in. Here are Sassy Mama’s Top 5 ways to rock denim for Spring…
First up, the Seventies is the decade to mine for inspiration right now, so it’s all about getting your high waist on! It’s not a look for everybody, but in general, if you’re narrow of hip and long of leg (and note, we all hate you) you’re a go. Citizens of Humanity have a super-wearable style that gives a nod to the trend but won’t make you look like you’re trying too hard. With a flared leg, dark wash and a mid-rise waist, you can pair them with a casual tee or tank tucked in, (head to Rue Madame to pick up an American Vintage tee) a long necklace and a little jacket or long cardi.
If you’re a curvy girl, then the high-waisted trend isn’t going to be for you – those mamas with a little junk in their trunk would do well to consider a cropped style with a turnup at the bottom, like these Goldsign Cropped Indigo Jeans. A cropped jean can be a little leg-shortening, so a heel is a must. Choose a wedge or chunky block heel in a neutral colour (Nine West have a great collection at the mo), and if you’re a little iffy about flashing your muffin top pair with a crisp white cotton tunic (check out H&M or Zara).
Think we’re total nutters for even suggesting wearing jeans during a Hong Kong Spring? Well, then check out this super-light chambray shirt-dress from Anthropologie. Just perfect for running around town with a bright pair of flats, hoop earrings and a cross-body bag. We love this because it has a waist-cinching drawstring, but there are tons of versions (check Club Monaco) that are just straight shirt dresses.
Can’t remember when you last wore a denim shirt? Us neither, because they’ve been a faux pas for the best part of the last decade, but they’re back! In our opinions this isn’t an item to splash out on, so this one from asos fits the bill. The double-denim look is also back, but we’d say best to mix up patterns and textures by wearing it tucked into shorts or black skinnies, or even open over a floral dress. Alexa Chung should be your inspiration.
Finally, a fab little denim skirt will look great with just about anything – try a tucked in striped tee and gladiators. This Current/Elliot “The Ice Cream Skirt” is not so short you’ll be flashing your knickers when you bend down… kind of a must for a mama!
