Setting Private bayside

Thai boutique hotel Trisara has long been known as a secluded sanctuary for couples, but this luxe retreat, set above a private bay on Phuket’s north-west coast, also makes an ideal family-friendly break. Each suite or villa has a jaw-dropping ocean view and its own pool (sure to please the young ’uns). Grown-ups can de-stress in the day spa while youngsters will be kept occupied by an array of activities on offer at the kids’ club.

Need to know

Rooms: 39 rooms, ranging from double suites to four-bedroom villas.

Facilities: Free broadband internet in rooms and some public areas, library of books, CDs, DVDs and board games, spa, gym, tennis courts, gift shops, gardens, kids club. In rooms: flatscreen TV, CD/DVD players, minibar, own-label natural toiletries.

In the know

Sleeping: Unlike many other high-end resorts, Trisara is refreshingly child-friendly. Kiddies of all ages are welcome but those under 12 stay free, making this Thai paradise the perfect family escape. Cots for tots or extra beds for those a little older can be provided free of charge. Juniors over the age of 12 can score a foldout bed and breakfast daily for US$125. Trisara has a number of larger villas suited to families of all sizes, such as the two-bedroom Ocean View Pool Villa, which has a separate living and dining. The resort also has residential villas that feature up to four bedrooms. Each comes complete with its own private pool and the added luxury of an in-house cook and maid to keep tummies full and toys out of sight.

Playing: Trisara is one of the few luxury resorts with a kids club. Trisara Kids, located in its own dedicated (and secluded) pavilion is open from 10am to 8pm every day, and is divided into areas for younger tots and those aged eight and over. Kiddies under four are welcome but must be supervised by a parent or nanny. The centre is fully staffed, and kids can enjoy indoor activities including watching movies, playing computer games, card making, cupcake baking and even Thai dancing. Staff also run daily outdoor activities including tennis, beach games and an array of water activities for older children such as wind surfing, kayaking and snorkelling trips to the tropical islands that lie just off shore.

Splashing: The main pool of the resort has a shallow end for smaller tots and there is a lifeguard on duty from 8am to 7pm. Each of the suites and villas also has its own private plunge pool, which is sure to impress older kiddies but will require a watchful eye from parents if toddlers are around.

Feasting: Though Trisara’s restaurant is one of the best on Phuket, the creative kitchen team is equally up to the task of catering to fussy kiddies, and can heat up baby milk and food for bubs, or prepare packed lunches.

No need to pack: Baby cots, buggies, sterilisers, highchairs, changing mats or children’s toiletries – Trisara has it all.

Time-out: If you’re a Smith member, you will receive an exclusive gift of handmade chocolates and fruit, plus 25 per cent off all massages at Trisara’s heavenly spa. For the ultimate de-stress treatment try the signature six-handed ‘Royal Trisara’ massage, which involves pampering by three therapists. And while you receive some well-deserved R&R, the kids can be in the capable hands of one of the resorts babysitters, who will look after junior Smiths for THB350 per hour.
