I think all mamas will agree, some days you just gotta fake it till you make it! There’ll probably be days (or weeks or months) where no matter how much under-eye concealer you use, those sleepless nights and stressful days dealing with your little bundles of joy will do in your normally gloriously youthful face. Well, I’m here to tell you there’s a secret to looking always chic, always composed and always polished) — shades and lips! Nothing plays the dual function of full mama battle camo more quickly and easily than this easy combo.

Shades

First up, let’s talk shades. Your sunglasses do not have to be basic black. After all, what’s more fun for the kiddos than seeing their gorgeous mama decked out in sparkly shades that burst while strutting down the street? I’ve shortlisted a few brands that I’ve been noticing and well, just deserve a little shout-out:

1. Elizabeth James
Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have hit the sweet spot with their trendy but smart designer label Elizabeth and James. A week rarely goes by when I don’t have a few of these pieces on rotation- they take you from office to playgroup while looking like you have it all pulled together. Which you do of course.

The best part of the brand are the stylishly on-point and affordable sunglasses! Most of the line is available on Shopbop (I’m a major customer here, busy working Mom and all!) so it’s just too easy to stock up on shades in every style.

efefeElizabeth and James’ Fairfax sunglasses are my go-to for super light shades. They’re slightly reminiscent of the cat eye, but less intense for when I’m really not feeling like a pin-up. $1,489 on Shopbop – that means free shipping! Score!

2. Super Sunglasses
Super… wearable! I’ve loved this brand for a while. It’s more affordable compared your Gucci and Prada brands and has just the right balance of cool but not too crazy. I seem to find that they fit the flat nose bridges that we East Asians are blessed with.

superSuper Sunglasses are available at Lane Crawford and on my favourite online store Shopbop! Prices start at $1,195 so shipping is free to Hong Kong. Score!

3. Spektre Sunglasses
If you are a fan of coloured lenses, which I am and love to wear by the pool, check out Spektre Sunglasses which are very under the radar here, and totally price-friendly.

spektreThe Spektre Audacia for $1,576 is available at www.spektre.bigcartel.com.

4. Oakley’s
You can also never go wrong with a pair of classic Oakley Frogskins, which my husband and I like to custom order in our favourite shades.

ereOakley Frogskins start at $852 and are available at www.oakley.com. A smaller range is available in local Oakley stores.

On a related note, Sassy Mama favourite The 9th Muse has recently undergone a massive renovation so now’s the perfect time to drop by their new store on Lyndhurst Terrace for a browse. They carry a fantastic range of chic shades from brands like Karen Walker and the impossibly affordable Le Specs (we’re talking $200-$300!).

Lips

narsSo you have the shades covered, what about the lips? There are so many choices out there, but let’s make this easy — NARS, NARS and more NARS makes Mama Jo a happy camper. I’m a total NARS junkie when it comes to lip colour. On any given day, you’ll find at least three colours in my handbag — a coloured gloss stick, a matte red and a neutral. These three come in handy no matter what the occasion.

I often have to dash off last minute to our events after a full day of work and nothing amps up my office face more than NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Dragon Girl, or Damned if I am feeling a bit more vampy. I recently picked up their new The Multiple shade which gives that amazing “inner glow” on cheeks and “just kissed” look on lips.

Pro Tip:  Make sure you apply a light coat of foundation or whatever base you use all around your mouth and on lips, followed by a light coat of finishing powder. This will ensure your lipstick really stays, and makes the application much easier as the skin around your lips won’t be blotchy. Finally, add a touch of highlighter such as YSL’s Touche Elat or MAC’s Cream Colour Base (I use Pearl) on your bow. Apply with a concealer brush for best results!
