Kids aren’t meant to be cooped up all day — we say let them play outside! Here are some surefire ways to help them fall in love with Hong Kong’s nature.

We firmly believe that nature is the best playground. Whenever the sun’s out, we simply love being outdoors! Indeed, Hong Kong may have a reputation as a concrete jungle, but it has tons of gorgeous nature spots that are just waiting to be discovered. On Earth Day 2026, what better way to appreciate our planet than by enjoying the city’s nature together with the whole family?

Here are some great ways to make your kids fall in love with Hong Kong’s beautiful nature.

Let them take the reins

We love how getting out in nature means that the children can engage in free open-ended play. There are no rules or structure here; really, anything goes. Let them follow a leaf flowing down a stream, or use sticks to make patterns in the soil. Build a castle in the sand, or mix dirt and water together to form a pie. Try not to instruct your children, and let them take the lead. You’ll be surprised at what they’ll come up with!

Sassy Mama Tip: In fact, why not take it one step further by encouraging your children to get a plant baby?

Don’t be afraid to let your children get dirty

We swear by the benefits of sensory play, and take every chance for our kids to enjoy it! Let sand fall through their fingers, feel the textures of leaves and sticks, or just ask them to lie on their backs to listen to the musical sounds of nature. Ask them what they can hear: can they hear the wind whistling through the trees, the sound of cicadas chirping, or the gentle bubbling of a waterfall? Or, have a fun painting session while lying on the grass.

Try nature-based arts and crafts

Our kids love having a job to do. Cover a piece of cardboard with sticky tape, and ask them to find and stick any leaves or sticks that stand out to them. Take the time to chat with them and find out why they chose each particular item, which can be used to create a lovely collage. Other activities include going camping in your backyard, starting a collection of rocks or using a magnifying glass to watch ants carry food back to their nest.

Take nature excursions

Even better, finding leaves and sticks to stick on their sticky board can also be a great way to get them kids moving while on hikes! Family-friendly hikes in Hong Kong include Devil’s Peak, Cape D’Aguilar and Dragon’s Back. To sweeten the deal, take on Pineapple Dam Nature Trail, where the kids can observe monkeys in their natural habitat. During the hike, point out familiar plants and flowers; you can even get them to smell the various scents.

Sassy Mama Tip: Alternatively, plan an island-hopping adventure to islands such as Lamma Island and Cheung Chau. Po Toi and Tap Mun Islands’ unique geographical formations and amazing views are our absolute favourites! For the more active sorts, Sharp Island offers fun snorkelling or canoeing opportunities.

Teach them what goes into their food and medicine

Our meals and medicine contain lots of herbs, but how much do we really know about them? Plan a visit to the Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Garden’s herb garden, where you’ll find more than 300 species of medicinal plants. Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden also organises a whole lineup of workshops and information sessions. Otherwise, spend an hour learning about herbs and plants at Sheung Wan’s herb garden. If you’re on Lamma Island, don’t miss out on dropping by Herboland. Visit its herb gardens, sample herbal teas at the café, plus learn all about organic and seasonal herbs and vegetables.

Go stargazing

Lie back, and relax as you bring the kids on a glorious stargazing adventure. Head to places with little light, such as the 24/7 Astropark in Sai Kung, Tai Hung Tun in Clearwater Bay, as well as the Sai Wan Stargazing site in Sai Kung East Country Park.

Sassy Mama Tip: Download Hong Kong Space Museum’s ‘Space Hoppers’ app to teach the kids about constellations and listen to stories behind them. There’s even a cool Augmented Reality mode that allows you to map what you see through your smartphone camera in real-time.
