How you can raise funds for this documentary about domestic helpers!
Around 330,000 domestic helpers live and work in Hong Kong. Many work for families, and spend their days caring for someone else’s children, while their own remain back home, so far away. This month, Sassy Mama is supporting a Kickstarter campaign which is raising money for a documentary called The Helper, created and produced by filmmakers Joanna Bowers, founder of Cheeky Monkey Productions and Tony Verb. This film will spotlight the daily hardships and sacrifices faced by domestic helpers who must live and work apart from their own families who remain in the Philippines, Indonesia, or Nepal to ensure them a better life.
This documentary follows members of a choir, ‘The Unsung Heroes’, composed of domestic helpers, as they prepare to perform at Clockenflap, the biggest music festival in Hong Kong. There, they will sing in front of an audience of thousands, ‘I Wish I Could Kiss You Goodnight’, a song dedicated to their children. Read on to find out more about this exciting initiative and how you can help!
How can you help: The filmmakers are crowdfunding the film on Kickstarter, and you can donate as little as US$5 to their campaign to help fund the documentary. Not only will the film encourage an appreciation for the hardships that helpers face and highlight their unique experiences, 51 per cent of the profits will be going to Pathfinders, Mission for Migrant Workers and Enrich, all non-governmental organisations that aim to better the lives of migrant domestic workers. The film will, above all, highlight the fact that domestic workers in Hong Kong are valuable individuals of our society. This is just the first step to helping our domestic helpers gain more civil liberties and legal rights. Keep your eyes peeled for the Kickstarter trailer for The Helper!
