High street or high end, here’s our guide for your most savvy fashion investments this autumn and winter.
Sure, we’ve just said goodbye to summer (according to the calendar, not necessarily the actual HK weather!), but we’re already yearning for that nip in the air, extra chunky knits, spiced lattes and some cosy vibes. Mamas, if you’re confused between plaid and print, structured or cape – basically what to pick and what to miss for your autumn shopping list – you’ve hit the right page. We’ve scoured the runways for the coolest seasonal trends, so scroll down to see which styles made the cut in our trend guide.

The runways have spoken. From Marc Jacobs to Chanel, Chloé, Balmain, Burberry, Oscar de la Renta and Celine; this oversized showpiece is having a major moment. And why not? It’s essentially like wearing a comfy, effortlessly chic blanket and perfect for when the chill starts to roll in. From Chanel’s tweed tweak to Marc Jacob’s leopard print and Givenchy’s cape trench hybrid – there’s a style and cut for every occasion.
If you’re snapping up a chunky cape, pair it with trousers or skinny jeans. Then, add boots to balance out the proportions. If a structured, sleek cape which serves as an alternative to a pashmina is your pick, then style it with wide-leg trousers. The sleek cape blazer is every fashionista’s must-have staple. It’s most elegant when matched with leather leggings, sunglasses and a cute choker.
Buy high street alternatives from Forever New, Next and Asos. Anteprima stores in Hong Kong also have this understated yet sophisticated cape outerwear that we’re totes in love with.
Save your all-black leather for next year. This autumn will be all about leather in a range of shapes and styles with a punch of colour. Pants, coats, skirts and even shirts, leather was lured onto the ramps this year. Alexander McQueen created a fiery red leather dress, Fendi favoured an orange leather trench and Hermes dived into a stunning forest green zip-up jacket.
So mamas, if you are going for this foolproof everyday look, pair your coloured leather trench with a slip dress and basic sneakers or add a check pencil skirt and knee-length boots for a winning combination. Leather is so versatile, think outside the box and team it with a cocktail dress, even a power suit or printed tights for a more relaxed daytime vibe.
We heart this leather midi with gold buttons from Zara, it’s so Instagrammable! Slip on Zara’s soft pink leather shirt with these faux leather pants from H&M for an instant lift in your swag quotient.
A camel coat is the calm in the fickle storm of the fashion world. Because sometimes basic is the best. Short or long, wrap or duffle; camel coats are the chicest winter ’19 investment to make. They’ve definitely stood the test of time. The cashmere wraparound style by Max Mara spells timeless luxury while the Burberry camel trench is a must-have for blustery autumn.
The easy elegance of this outerwear makes for a great autumn/winter staple in your wardrobe. Whether for office, date night or a park playdate with the kids, camel coats always exude sophistication. Massimo Dutti’s unstructured long wool camel coat or Max Mara’s (in stores) exquisite pieces are luxurious items to make you look polished and put together. High street alternatives can be bought at Mango, Zara, Next and Asos.
It’s an opulent rage at the moment. A faux fur pullover, jacket or coat – a great piece will conquer all your autumn/winter style foes and give you the feels of living inside a big, fluffy cloud all day long. And who doesn’t love the soft caresses of faux fur? Your littles will surely approve of the squishy cuddles they steal once you wrap yourself in one.
Bold enough to criss-cross two runway styles? Then give this trendy faux fur zebra stripes coat from Mango a go. Or opt for this fine beige high-neck crop top from Zara – it’s perfectly versatile and oozes oomph. The open design sleeveless imitation fur gilet at ASOS is ultra-glam but we’re seriously lusting after this midnight black, collarless coat also at ASOS. So strokable and on point for a night on the town!
50 shades of beige
Fashion naivety of equating beige with boring will no longer be forgiven because autumn/winter 2019 is all set to bring forth a tsunami of tan. Mamas, this is the time to experiment with fabric (think leather, faux fur, feathers, sherpa, knit, pashmina) but look out for shades of tan, khaki, cappuccino, ecru, toffee and beige.
The heavy logo-driven, maximalism kind of attitude of the last few seasons hit a saturation point this year. So it might come as a surprise that the current fashion must-have is the understated beige. And, it’s kinda bland to stop yourself at just one statement sand piece, ’tis the season to be awash in layers of head-to-toe neutrals or nothing! You could team your caramel coloured coat with an off-white shirt, a beige skirt and neutral snake print boots. Throw in a tan muffler for some contrast. Chunky gold accessories are always a great addition to take the tonal look from cute to chic.
In fact, the trend is such a hit with fashion editors and fans that the hashtag #beigeaesthetic has more than 98,000 posts on Instagram. We think it would be totally snazzy to invest in this contemporary cut dress from Forever New, pair it with just about any beige lapel coat, or a tan waterfall jacket, even a neat single breast blazer or a luxe faux fur scarf.
Millennial purple and pistachio green are here
Move over millennial pink, colour trends are all over the map in 2019. With so many choices, everyone will find something they love.
The truly autumnal shade which dominated the New York Fashion scene this year is purple. Named the Pantone colour of 2018, there’s no escaping the lilacs, mauves, lavenders, aubergines and the ultra violets hues. From Brie Larson to Cardi B and Kylie Jenner, Hollywood has given this shade a test run.
Pick up Zara’s dramatically romantic lilac organza blouse or opt for this basic ribbed sweater with gold cuffs. Mix it up with Coach’s classic dark berry pumps and call it a look. H&M has these cute sunnies for daywear. Feel free to team them up with Adidas’ sporty purple watch while you strut your stroller and baby in style.
Pistachio green is fashion’s chosen new colour. It has mesmerised the ramps and quickly being adapted by the high street style scene. And why not, this fresh, cool tone is easy on the eyes and looks good in clothing as well as accessories.
We approve of this textured pistachio green scarf from Mango. Club the green high waist pants at Zara with any white ribbed tee and ankle-length boots for an edgy look. Pint-sized bags are a big trend at the moment, ASOS has a glossy, croc print in pistachio green which feels fresh for autumn.
Wild animal prints
Get your animal instincts roaring because boots with a touch of the wild are officially here. Full-throttle ferocity marked the international ramps with the zebra and cow print having their sweet moment of glory.
You needn’t choose between snakeskin, leopard spots, bovine or zebra for the most intense look. Just embrace the chaos, don’t worry about looking a bit like a zoo. That’s kind of the current trend at the moment. So take a walk on the wild side with these zebra print, kitten heeled boots at Zara. Pair with leather leggings, a jumper and a crocodile embossed top handle handbag at Guess.
Which trend will you be picking up this season?
