International School Fees FAQs
What is included in international school fees?
Tuition generally covers classroom teaching and may include essential learning materials, technology or selected activities. There’s no one-size-fits-all answer though. Some schools include textbooks and examination fees, while others charge for them separately.
What are the most affordable international schools in Hong Kong?
Some of the most affordable international schools in Hong Kong include Lantau International School, with annual tuition starting from $81,000, Kiangsu & Chekiang International Section, starting from $85,400, and Korean International School’s International Section, starting from $101,500.
ESF schools can also offer relatively lower fees compared with many private international schools, with annual tuition starting from $107,200.
What extra costs should parents budget for?
The school fees don’t always stop at tuition! Application and entry fees, capital levies, debentures, uniforms, lunches, laptops, school buses, camps, trips, examinations and extracurricular activities could all be added to the bill.
What is the difference between Hong Kong international schools, private independent schools, private schools and a DSS schools?
Hong Kong international schools generally admit at least 70% non-local students, while Private Independent Schools must maintain a student population of at least 70% Hong Kong permanent residents.
Direct Subsidy Scheme schools (DSS) receive government funding but may charge tuition fees and have greater flexibility over admissions and curriculum. Some offer IB or other international programmes, but they remain part of Hong Kong’s publicly funded school sector.
Registered private schools sit outside the EDB’s formal international-school category, and their admissions processes, language requirements and fee structures may differ considerably. However some, including Invictus School and Wycombe Abbey, offer international, bilingual or alternative curricula and may be worth considering alongside more conventional international-school options.

What is the difference between a debenture and a capital levy?
A capital levy is usually a non-refundable charge paid annually to support a school’s facilities and long-term development. A debenture is typically a much larger upfront payment that may replace the annual levy and offer admissions priority. The exact terms used by schools vary, so be sure to ask for the specific details from the school you are applying for.

Do all international schools require a debenture?
No — you won’t necessarily need to find several hundred thousand dollars down the back of the sofa. Some schools charge an annual capital or building levy instead, while others allow families to choose between a levy and an eligible debenture.
Do school fees increase every year?
They certainly can. International schools regularly review tuition and capital charges, with proposed increases generally subject to approval from Hong Kong’s Education Bureau, so allow some wiggle room in your long-term education budget.
Are application and assessment fees refundable?
Usually not. Typically application or processing fees are non-refundable and non-transferable. And paying the fee also doesn’t guarantee an assessment, interview or school place! ALWAYS read the conditions before hitting “submit”.

Do Hong Kong international schools offer sibling discounts?
Some do, but sibling discounts are far from universal. Where available, they may only apply from the third child onwards or take the form of a reduced capital charge, so check the school’s current policy rather than assuming the family rate will kick in.
Are scholarships or financial assistance available?
Yes, selected schools offer merit-based scholarships, means-tested bursaries or short-term financial assistance. Places and funding are limited, eligibility rules differ and applications may need to be made alongside the main admissions application, so it pays to enquire early.

Are school bus fees included in international school tuition fees?
Generally, no. School transport is usually an optional extra arranged through the school or an external operator, with the cost depending on the route and pick-up location. Another reason to look closely at where the campus is located!
