How We Compared The International School Fees

There’s no simple way to work out the most affordable international school. But that doesn’t mean we’re not going to give it a go! We looked beyond headline tuition fees and calculated the cost of the full primary or secondary pathway using current rates. Then we added on all compulsory non-refundable application fees and capital levies, while leaving out deposits and debentures that families are able to reclaim. Finally, we averaged that figure out per year, and voila!

Most Affordable International Primary Schools In Hong Kong

The most affordable international primary schools offer a surprisingly diverse mix of British, bilingual, French, Canadian and IB curricula. They are also spread well beyond the traditional international-school hubs. Campuses are located across Hong Kong, with options in North Point, Sai Wan Ho, Tai Koo, Tai Po, Ma On Shan and Lantau. Annual levies and one-off charges noticeably narrow the gap between schools, showing why tuition alone does not tell the full affordability story.

Most Affordable International Secondary Schools In Hong Kong

The secondary shortlist is equally varied, covering British and IGCSE pathways, the IB, French national curriculum, Canadian OSSD and American/AP programmes. Families will again find options across Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories. Fees do tend to rise substantially in the senior years, so schools with relatively consistent tuition across the entire secondary pathway — particularly KCIS and KIS — retain a clear affordability advantage.

Is The School With The Lowest Tuition Fees Really The Cheapest?

Not always. Our tables include compulsory non-refundable charges, but not additional costs such as uniforms, devices, school buses, trips, activities or extra tutoring and language support where these are expected. The figures provide a useful starting point, but ask each school for an itemised estimate and do your own research. These less obvious expenses can make a big difference to the final cost.

Other Ways To Reduce The Cost Of School Fees In Hong Kong

Choosing a school with lower fees is one option, but it is not the only way to make education more affordable. A little research into financial assistance, included extras and everyday costs can lead to worthwhile savings.

Explore scholarships and financial assistance

Some schools offer means-tested financial assistance, merit-based scholarships or fee-remission schemes. Places and funding may be limited, so check application deadlines, eligibility requirements and whether support is guaranteed for future years.

Compare school bus and commuting costs

A lower-fee school on the other side of Hong Kong may not be such a bargain once daily transport is added. Compare school bus charges, public transport routes and journey times. Particularly if you will eventually have more than one child making the commute.

Check whether devices, trips and activities are included

Ask exactly what tuition covers. Laptops, textbooks, examination fees, camps, overseas trips and extracurricular activities may be included at one school but charged separately at another, making a slightly higher tuition fee better value overall.

Ask about sibling discounts

Some schools offer reduced tuition or levies for second, third and subsequent children. Check which charges qualify, how long the discount applies and whether siblings must attend at the same time.

Alternative school types

International schools are not the only option for families seeking an English-medium or internationally focused education. DSS schools and some local schools offer bilingual programmes, English-medium teaching or international qualifications at lower fees, although admissions requirements, language expectations and curricula can differ considerably. There are also growing home schooling and world schooling communities in Hong Kong that offer alternate pathways.
