One of our favourite, inspirational events of the year is back – TEDxTinHauWomen 2021!
After a rocky couple of years, even the most resilient women have felt a little out of sorts. It’s been tough for all of us and a challenge to say the least, but we’re pushing through, acknowledging the curve balls that have been thrown our way. With this is mind, TEDxTinHauWomen are taking inspiration from what really matters in life – health, kindness, patience, empathy, enthusiasm, love and optimism.
So, what can you expect from TEDxTinHauWomen 2021? A new venue at the Xiqu Centre for one! And ten truly, truly inspirational speakers on the theme “What Matters Now?” These women are covering diverse topics ranging from racial inequality and social justice to technology, upcycling and neon arts.
Here’s a snapshot of four inspiring Mamas presenting at TEDxTinHauWomen this year.
Maitreyi Karanth – Proving that age is just a number
Think it’s too late to reinvent yourself? Think again! Maitreyi Karanth wears many hats, mother, humanitarian, writer, actor, producer and stand up comedian, but what is truly remarkable is that this multi-talented performer only entered this highly competitive industry at the age of 44. You may have seen her breaking stereotypes and pushing boundaries on-stage at the TakeOut Comedy Club, or seen her work in the Canto-Indo movie “My Indian Boyfriend“.
There’s more to this inspirational Mama than her career. Maitreyi cooks for the homeless and helps distribute home-cooked meals to people in quarantine. She also shelters 15 rescue dogs and contributes to charities providing shelter to the homeless in both the Philippines and Thailand.
Arcadia Kim – Dismantling the stigma around screen time
Hands up if you have a house full of screens… from iPads to smartphones to the good ol’ TV, it’s fair to say that screens are here to stay! Arcadia Kim knows this all too well and the former video game executive also has experience of just how addictive our devices can be. Rather than face an uphill battle managing her kids’ screen time, she’s chosen to take the power away from the screens and allow them infinite screen time. We think she’s onto something and to put it in her own words – “technology is a language for our kids and screentime is the medium”.
Shanty – What a rockstar!
If only we could all move to the beat of our own drums like this inspirational Mama. Shanty wears many hats – Indonesian pop star, actor, entrepreneur, VJ to name a few. She is unapologetic about being herself and is forging her own path, undeterred by the ups and downs that life throws in. We can’t wait to hear how she’s juggled an impressive career (five albums, ten feature films and three singles to her name!), with her passion for outdoor activities like wakeboarding, canyoning or even coasteering and, of course, spending time with her children.

Rachel Moon – “Fertility Warrior”
Like many women, Rachel Moon made her mark in the professional world. She established her career, producing and performing in theatrical shows the world over, and was keen to embark on the next, more personal journey – motherhood. The modern fertility journey is long and winding, full of physical and emotional ups and downs that too often go undiscussed. Rachel wants to change this, sharing her fertility stories – fears, tears and all. Hopefully, through these open and honest conversations, the taboos surrounding women’s fertility will become a thing of the past.
