Because we all know time is of the essence!
How many times do you finish your makeup, only to catch a glimpse of yourself in the mirror several hours later to find almost all of it has slid right off your face (and looks like you never bothered in the first place)? The humidity and changeable climate in Hong Kong (blazing sun one minute, torrential rain the next!) doesn’t help us in the battle to keep our carefully applied war paint in place. So we decided to identify some summer makeup saviours to help the busy mums out there. Not only will they keep you looking and feeling fresh as you race the kids from summer camps to play dates (and juggle work at the same time), but they’ll also fit neatly into your handbag and can be applied on the go!
Blotting paper is a must in our books and is usually our first line of defence when it comes to summer makeup touchups, especially during the sweaty July and August period. You can buy it most places (Sasa has a great collection), but we love this version from Fenty. It’s made using natural botanical fibres and manages to absorb excess oil without lifting off your makeup at the same time. Not only does it look pretty in pink packaging, but it’s also really practical. It has tiny little teeth so you only tear off as much as you need and it’s also refillable. There’s even a handy mirror on the lid so you can see what you’re doing.
Available online from Sephora, $150
A touch of powder is also a great weapon in the fight against shine, and we love this version from Benefit. There’s a built-in brush in the base of the packaging, so you can just tap the powder into the lid and sweep over the t-zone area as required. It comes in a neutral one-shade suits all and instantly mattifies sheen. As it’s part of the POREfessional range, it also helps to minimise the appearance of pores to leave your skin looking extra smooth. We like that it doesn’t cake, no matter how many times a day you need to apply!
We can always rely on Charlotte Tilbury to solve our summer makeup dilemmas and her Glowgasm face kit is definitely one of our saviours in this heat. It includes a highlighter, multi-glow, blusher and bronzer, and we recommend using it on both your eyes and cheeks. You can use it to create as subtle or dramatic a look as you like (if you’re aiming for the latter, wet your brush before applying). It’s perfect if you’re craving a sunkissed glow, but are stuck in air-conditioned buildings all day and night. It will also take care of your contouring needs, so if there’s only space in your handbag for one palette you won’t regret carrying this one!

Adding a statement lip is a great way to achieve maximum impact with minimum fuss, so a good lipstick is a handbag must-have. Our current favourite comes from the Parisian brand La Bouche Rouge. The company estimates that around one-billion lipsticks are thrown away every year, so it’s set itself a goal to persuade people to “buy less in order to buy better.” The initial outlay isn’t cheap because you’ll need to purchase its refillable leather lipstick case ($1,000), but it’s totally plastic free, comes in a choice of five colours and looks so good you’ll be the envy of your mum squad. The lipstick refills themselves cost $350, there’s a great range of shades (try out Neon Giedre or Dewy Pink for summer) and are vegan. So, all in all, we think it’s worth the higher price point.
When it comes to summer makeup, just like a good lipstick, mascara is a great quick fix for busy mums to help achieve a wide-awake look after sleepless nights. We’re currently using (and loving) this Lancôme version. Not only is it waterproof, so you won’t be left with a panda eyes effect if the humidity (or carrying around a little one) leaves you sweating, but it really is long-wearing. It helps to add some volume to your lashes, which is buildable so you can apply several coats if needed to get your desired effect (without worrying about it clumping). Plus it uses Lancôme’s SoftSculpt™ formula which is enriched with vitamin B5 to help nourish, so it’s also kind to your lashes.

This hydrating spray has long been a favourite of ours for its soothing and setting ability. The range has been expanded to include various scented versions now, including rose, coconut and lavender (but we are still big fans of the original). And we think it’s only fair to put the latest addition to the collection on your radar because a new version with SPF30 is set to hit the shelves soon. Not only will it set your summer makeup, but it will provide broad-spectrum sun protection too (we love it already!). The Prep+Prime Fix+ SPF30 Sun Spray is set to hit select stores in early August. We don’t know yet know if this includes Hong Kong, but we’re sure you’ll be able to snap it up online if not. We think it will be worth hunting this one down!
