When I was pregnant with my first child, way back in 1996 – it was so difficult to find stylish and comfortable maternity clothes that didn’t have big frilly collars and pictures of ducks, flowers and teddy bears scattered over it. In Hong Kong, Sono Vaso was developed as a maternity brand to address the style needs of expectant mothers.
Mel McInally, the designer behind Sono Vaso, used a trip to Italy as her inspiration this season. She wanted to reflect casual feeling of an Italian summer, combining the natural environment with an historical element. This season the cuts of the clothing are tailored but with simple lines. Most of the garments are made from modal (a natural fibre made from beechwood pulp) allowing the garments to drape beautifully and to be dressed up or down depending on the time of day and the occasion. Detailing includes the use of matt bronze sequins that references the ancient bronze artifacts that are still being excavated around Italy.
Mel and her partner, Rita Yaworsky, spend around 14 months developing each new season’s range. Their clothing has been so popular that the pair have developed a resort collection, called Sono Vacanza, which has a slimmer cut than the maternity range, but could work equally as well as maternity wear, given the stretch of modal.
Sono Vaso new range is available online at www.sonovaso.com.
