The FIFA World Cup 2026 is taking place from Thursday, 11 June to Sunday, 19 July 2026, bringing together 48 teams from around the world for more than a month of football fever. The 2026 tournament is extra exciting because it’s the first men’s World Cup to include 48 teams, with matches hosted across Canada, Mexico and the United States.
Teams start in groups, playing several matches to try and qualify for the knockout rounds. From there, it’s win or go home, with the drama building all the way to the final. In parent terms: expect flags, shouting, snacks, sudden heartbreak and at least one child asking you to explain offside at bedtime.

World Cup Matches To Watch This Week
The FIFA World Cup has officially entered the knockout stage, which means every match is now win-or-go-home. The Round of 32 runs through Saturday, 4 July, with big fixtures including Brazil vs Japan, Germany vs Paraguay, France vs Sweden, England vs DR Congo, Portugal vs Croatia, Australia vs Egypt and Argentina vs Cape Verde. Canada has already booked its spot in the Round of 16 after beating South Africa 1-0.
From Sunday, 5 July, the competition moves into the Round of 16, followed by the quarter-finals from Friday, 10 to Sunday, 12 July. For Hong Kong families watching from home or catching live screenings, most matches fall in the early morning, so this stage is best suited to football-mad kids, weekend viewing or recording the games for a more family-friendly replay.

Open around the clock, it’s made for those early-morning kick-offs, with a Hong Kong-style match-day atmosphere complete with local craft beer, dim sum, milk tea and coffee. Families can also look out for football viewing parties, appearances from Kitchee players, local football teams and girl group IdG Bubbles, plus kid-friendly activities including face painting, AI tattoos and football workshops.

Hong Kong Football Festival 2026 — Manchester City, Inter, Chelsea And Juventus At Kai Tak Stadium
Football fans, this is a big one! The Hong Kong Football Festival returns this summer, bringing four of Europe’s biggest clubs to Kai Tak Stadium. Families can catch Manchester City take on FC Internazionale Milano for The Asahi Super Dry Trophy, followed by Chelsea FC versus Juventus for The Herbalgy Trophy. There will also be open training sessions, giving young football fans another chance to see world-class players in action.

A Non-Football Parent’s Cheat Sheet
Football is played in two halves of 45 minutes, although stoppage time is usually added at the end of each half. A win in the group stage earns three points, a draw earns one and a loss earns none. Once the tournament reaches the knockout rounds, tied matches can go to extra time and penalties.
Yellow cards are warnings, red cards mean a player is sent off, corners happen when the defending team knocks the ball behind their own goal line, and free kicks are awarded after fouls.
As for offside? The simplest parent answer is that an attacking player can’t be too far ahead of the defenders when the ball is passed to them. That is probably enough unless you want to lose the rest of the evening to diagrams.
